Song of the Day #3,709: ‘Get it On (Bang a Gong)’ – T. Rex

Of all the albums I sampled to prepare for my look at the music of 1971, none hooked me as quickly or completely as T. Rex’s Electric Warrior.

My knowledge of T. Rex pretty much began and ended with today’s SOTD, ‘Get it On (Bang a Gong),’ the band’s only U.S. hit. It’s a great song, but one of many on an album that maintains that infectious glam rock groove throughout.

T. Rex, headed by lead singer and songwriter Marc Bolan, started as a psychedelic folk act known as Tyrannosaurus Rex. In 1970, the band went electric and shortened its name.

Electric Warrior was their second release under the new name, and is widely considered not just their best album but one of the best albums of the era.

The rest of the album sounds a lot like ‘Get it On’ — grungy, sexy, groovy. It’s quick, fun and dirty, but fresh enough to have inspired a generation of pop acts.

Bolan died in a car accident in 1977, two weeks shy of his 30th birthday, after which the band folded. Somehow I didn’t know that either.

And that’s why I love these ‘Decades’ posts.

[Verse 1]
Well you’re dirty and sweet
Clad in black don’t look back and I love you
You’re dirty and sweet, oh yeah
Well you’re slim and you’re weak
You’ve got the teeth of the hydra upon you
You’re dirty sweet and you’re my girl

[Chorus]
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on[x2]

[Verse 2]
Well you’re built like a car
You’ve got a hub cap diamond star halo
You’re built like a car, oh yeah
Well you’re an untamed youth
That’s the truth with your cloak full of eagles
You’re dirty sweet and you’re my girl

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
Well you’re windy and wild
You’ve got the blues in your shoes and your stockings
You’re windy and wild, oh yeah
Well you’re built like a car
You’ve got a hub cap diamond star halo
You’re dirty sweet and you’re my girl

[Chorus]

[Verse 4]
Well you’re dirty and sweet
Clad in black, don’t look back and I love you
You’re dirty and sweet, oh yeah
Well you dance when you walk
So let’s dance, take a chance, understand me
You’re dirty sweet and you’re my girl

[Outro]
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on – ow
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on – ow – get it on – mh
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on – a-a-a-a[x2]
Take me, for a meanwhile I’m still thinking

I became more familiar with this song when it was remade by The Power Station led by Robert Palmer. Here is their version:
