Song of the Day #3,688: ‘Delicate’ – Taylor Swift

In the 13th and 14th spots on Billboard’s Hot 100 we have two songs I featured the last time I looked at the charts — ‘The Middle‘ by Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey; and ‘Meant to Be‘ by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line. These two country-flavored hits were back to back in the top five in late May and they’ve stuck together lower on the chart.

At #15 is another (one-time) country artist, though it’s been awhile since Taylor Swift got her twang on. In fact, I think the best unexpected career move for Swift right now would be to put out another bona fide country pop album.

Last year’s Reputation has been a bit of a disappointment commercially, if you can say that about an album that smashed records upon its release. After lead-off single ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ hit #1, none of the album’s subsequent singles have reached the top spot. In fact, only one (‘Ready For It’) made it into the top ten.

Contrast that to previous album 1989, which landed three singles at #1 and two more in the top six.

But ‘Delicate’ has been slowly climbing the charts since its release, picking up steam rather than losing it. It’s the best song of the singles released so far, which might have something to do with that. It’s also a pretty, mid-tempo love song that isn’t bogged down by the petty revenge lyrics of those earlier tracks, and maybe more of what the world needs right now.

The accompanying video is a treat, even if it owes a major debt in both concept and execution to Spike Jonze’s Kenzo World perfume ad. The ‘Delicate’ video is made even cooler by the fact that my niece was on the production crew.

[Intro]
This ain’t for the best
My reputation’s never been worse, so
You must like me for me…
We can’t make
Any promises now, can we, babe?
But you can make me a drink

[Verse 1]
Dive bar on the East Side, where you at?
Phone lights up my nightstand in the black
Come here, you can meet me in the back
Dark jeans and your Nikes, look at you
Oh damn, never seen that color blue
Just think of the fun things we could do
‘Cause I like you

[Pre-Chorus]
This ain’t for the best
My reputation’s never been worse, so
You must like me for me…
Yeah, I want you
We can’t make
Any promises now, can we, babe?
But you can make me a drink

[Chorus]
Is it cool that I said all that?
Is it chill that you’re in my head?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate (delicate)
Is it cool that I said all that?
Is it too soon to do this yet?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
Isn’t it… delicate?

[Verse 2]
Third floor on the West Side, me and you
Handsome, you’re a mansion with a view
Do the girls back home touch you like I do?
Long night, with your hands up in my hair
Echoes of your footsteps on the stairs
Stay here, honey, I don’t wanna share
‘Cause I like you

[Pre-Chorus]
This ain’t for the best
My reputation’s never been worse, so
You must like me for me…
Yeah, I want you…
We can’t make
Any promises now, can we, babe?
But you can make me a drink

[Chorus]
Is it cool that I said all that?
Is it chill that you’re in my head?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate (delicate)
Is it cool that I said all that?
Is it too soon to do this yet?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
Isn’t it delicate?

[Bridge]
Sometimes I wonder when you sleep
Are you ever dreaming of me?
Sometimes when I look into your eyes
I pretend you’re mine, all the damn time
‘Cause I like you

[Chorus]
Is it cool that I said all that?
Is it chill that you’re in my head?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate (delicate)
(Yeah, I want you)
Is it cool that I said all that?
Is it too soon to do this yet?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate (delicate)
‘Cause I like you
Is it cool that I said all that?
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
Is it chill that you’re in my head?
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
(Yeah, I want you)
Is it cool that I said all that?
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
Is it too soon to do this yet?
Isn’t it? Isn’t it? Isn’t it?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate
Isn’t it delicate?

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I love that we have a personal connection to this video, and I’m looking forward to seeing Swift perform live next week with that special PA sitting next to me.😊

  2. willedare says:

That was quite a production your niece worked on — so many locations! I wonder who swept/washed the street before Ms. Swift danced barefoot on it near the end of the video. I hope this song continues to rise in the charts.

Thank you for the shoutout 🙂 I love the way this video came out and I think the song is really special (though Getaway Car continues to be my personal favorite on the album). Taylor really seemed to put in so much effort and joy to bringing some really tricky choreography to life. It’s so ironic how many security measures had to be taken on a video about Taylor wishing she could just disappear.
