Song of the Day #3,656: ‘Water Under the Bridge’ – Adele

‘Water Under the Bridge’ is one of the best songs on Adele’s 2015 album 25, which is a fine album start to finish. A fine album, but not a remarkable one, which makes its record-shattering commercial performance even more astounding.

These days it’s rare for an album to sell a million copies. Selling 2 million is a pipe dream. Over the past three years, only Taylor Swift (Reputation) and Ed Sheeran (÷) have reached the 2 million threshold.

That’s 2 million copies, total.

Adele’s 25 sold 3.38 million copies in its first week! By its third week it had sold more than 5 million copies, becoming the first album to hit that milestone since (you guessed it) Adele’s previous album, 21.

You can talk about Taylor Swift and Beyoncé all you want, and those artists are certainly more culturally significant than Adele. But with her four quadrant appeal, especially her appeal to women of all ages, Adele is uniquely — and lucratively — popular. The industry needs Adele, which goes a long way toward explaining why this album beat Beyoncé’s Lemonade at the Grammys.

[Verse 1]
If you’re not the one for me
Then how come I can bring you to your knees?
If you’re not the one for me
Why do I hate the idea of being free?
And if I’m not the one for you
You’ve gotta stop holding me the way you do
Oh honey, if I’m not the one for you
Why have we been through what we have been through?

[Pre-Chorus]
It’s so cold out here in your wilderness
I want you to be my keeper
But not if you are so reckless

[Chorus]
If you’re gonna let me down, let me down gently
Don’t pretend that you don’t want me
Our love ain’t water under the bridge
If you’re gonna let me down, let me down gently
Don’t pretend that you don’t want me
Our love ain’t water under the bridge
Say that our love ain’t water under the bridge

[Verse 2]
What are you waiting for?
You never seem to make it through the door
And who are you hiding from?
It ain’t no life to live like you’re on the run
Have I ever asked for much?
The only thing that I want is your love

[Chorus]
If you’re gonna let me down, let me down gently
Don’t pretend that you don’t want me
Our love ain’t water under the bridge
If you’re gonna let me down, let me down gently
Don’t pretend that you don’t want me
Our love ain’t water under the bridge
Say that our love ain’t water under the bridge

[Pre-Chorus]
It’s so cold in your wilderness
I want you to be my keeper
But not if you are so reckless

[Chorus]
If you’re gonna let me down, let me down gently
Don’t pretend that you don’t want me
Our love ain’t water under the bridge
If you’re gonna let me down, let me down gently
Don’t pretend that you don’t want me
Our love ain’t water under the bridge

[Outro]
Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so
Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so
Say that our love ain’t water under the bridge (Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so)
Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so
Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so
Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so
Say that our love ain’t water under the bridge (Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so)
Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so
Say that our love ain’t water under the bridge

  1. Dana Gallup says:

We were just watching one of those CNN Decades specials, which are all so well done and addictive by the way-highly recommend watching them. This one was focused on 90’s Music and included Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill album, which sold 50 million records. Oh, how the music industry has changed!
