Song of the Day #3,643: ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ – My Morning Jacket

Good news for those of you waiting with bated breath for the results of my ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ poll — today a victor will be crowned!

You’ll also get to (or be forced to, depending on your perspective) hear one more rendition of the song. This one is by My Morning Jacket, from The Music is You: A Tribute to John Denver, an album of covers released in 2013.

The album features performances by Dave Matthews, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, Train and others. I’m not sure what prompted its release in 2013, 16 years after Denver’s death.

This rendition of ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ is a beauty, with MMJ lead singer Jim James’ vocals matching the melancholy tone perfectly. Maybe it would have won the poll had I included it two weeks ago.

As for that poll (drumroll please), we have a tie for first place between the re-recorded version from Denver’s Greatest Hits album and the cover by 8-year-old Thai YouTuber Gail Sophicha.

[Verse 1]
All my bags are packed, I’m ready to go
I’m standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breaking, it’s early morn
The taxi’s waiting, he’s blowin’ his horn
Already I’m so lonesome I could die

[Chorus]
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you’ll wait for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go
‘Cause I’m leaving on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

[Verse 2]
There’s so many times I let you down
So many times I’ve played around
I tell you now, they don’t mean a thing
Every place I go, I’ll think of you
Every song I sing, I’ll sing for you
When I come back, I’ll bring your wedding ring

[Chorus]
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you’ll wait for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go
‘Cause I’m leaving on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

[Verse 3]
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time, let me kiss you
Then close your eyes, I’ll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won’t have to leave alone
About the times I won’t have to say

[Chorus]
Kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you’ll wait for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go
‘Cause I’m leaving on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

[Outro]
I’m leaving on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

The eight year old tied for first place? I’m calling Russian interference on that vote!

I’m guessing she and her family and friends discovered you had featured her cover on your blog and we’re quite excited to be in the running. So… congrats on tying for first. Your future is bright.

Meanwhile, I find it quite heartening to learn of a cover like that one or today’s SOTD. Or the recent appearance on Barry. It once again demonstrates how art is one way to achieve a sort of immortality.

I love the tone of this version of LOAJP by My Morning Jacket…
