Song of the Day #3,638: ‘What a Feeling’ – One Direction

When I asked my daughter Sophia to name her favorite One Direction song, she thought for a second and replied, ‘What a Feeling.’ I thanked her and withdrew, having decided on my Song of the Day for today, her 16th birthday.

Later she asked me why I wanted to know, and when I told her, she bristled, saying something along the lines of “Wait, that might not be the song I want to define me.”

Her reaction warmed my heart. It was something I would say, should somebody ask me my favorite anything. I’ve pored over countless top ten lists searching for the right combination of picks to define me.

Sophia isn’t really like that. She doesn’t overanalyze things. She loves what she loves without debate or apology. But there’s a little hint of that musical neurosis — a little hint of me — in her.

When I first became a father, I imagined filling my daughter’s young ears, heart and mind with the songs I loved, equipping her with a vast library of musical references that would set her apart from her boring peers.

That didn’t happen.

With a few exceptions, Sophia hasn’t embraced my personal favorites. She did something far more interesting; she discovered her own.

I’ve cringed through her rap phase, watched her embrace then reject then re-embrace country, marveled at her ability to dig through an ocean of new music to pinpoint an artist worth watching.

She didn’t adopt my favorites but I’ve come to appreciate hers, from Khalid to Billie Eilish and, yes, One Direction.

And we share a deep adoration of Josh Rouse, so maybe some of that early brainwashing worked.

The best part of fatherhood is when you stop trying to mold your kids into who you expect them to be and start marveling at who they really are. I’m glad I learned that early on.

Happy Birthday, Sophia, from your biggest fan.

[Verse 1: Liam]
Through the wire, through the wire, through the wire
I’m watching her dance, dress is catching the light
In her eyes there’s no lies, no lies
There’s no question, she’s not in a disguise

[Pre-Chorus: Louis]
With no way out and a long way down
Everybody needs someone around
But I can’t hold you, too close now
Through the wire, through the wire

[Chorus: All]
What a feeling to be right here beside you now
Holding you in my arms
When the air ran out and we both started running wild
The sky fell down
But you’ve got stars, they’re in your eyes
And I’ve got something missing tonight
What a feeling to be a king beside you, somehow
I wish I could be there now

[Verse 2: Liam]
Through the wire, through the wire, through the wire
I’m watching you like this, imagining you’re mine
It’s too late, it’s too late, am I too late?
Tell me now, am I running out of time?

[Pre-Chorus: Niall & Harry]
With no way out and a long way down
Everybody needs someone around
But I can’t hold you, too close now
Through the wire, through the wire

[Chorus: All]
What a feeling to be right here beside you now
Holding you in my arms
When the air ran out and we both started running wild
The sky fell down
But you’ve got stars, they’re in your eyes
And I’ve got something missing tonight
What a feeling to be a king beside you, somehow
I wish I could be there now

[Bridge: Harry]
Whatever chains are holding you back
Holding you back, don’t let ’em tie you down
Whatever change is holding you back
Holding you back, tell me you believe in that

[Chorus: All]
What a feeling to be right here beside you now
Holding you in my arms
When the air ran out and we both started running wild
The sky fell down
But you’ve got stars, they’re in your eyes
And I’ve got something missing tonight
What a feeling to be a king beside you, somehow
I wish I could be there now, I wish I could be there now

So well put. I have not left as much of a musical imprint on Laura as she has on me. She has really embraced may of my old classics but I’m made so much more contemporary and diverse from her discoveries than from my old favs. There are the crossovers like Eminem, Traci chapman, Billy Joel, Amy Winehouse. But if not for her, I would not know Chance the Rapper, Watsky, Taylor Swift, Childish Gambino, Beyoncé, Sza ,, etcetera, etcetera. Although it warms my heart that our travel music was always Jackson Browne and Laura, Morrie and Phil
went to that concert together a few months ago.
I apologize for this lengthy post. better calm down with the coffee! Anyway, loved yours this morning, Clay!
