Song of the Day #3,609: ‘God’s Plan’ – Drake

Yesterday I posted about Drake’s ‘Nice for What’ being the first #1 debut to replace a previous #1 debut by the same artist. Well, here’s Drake’s previous #1 debut — ‘God’s Plan,’ which is now at #3.

This was Drake’s second solo #1 (after ‘One Dance’). He previously hit the top spot twice in support of Rihanna, with ‘Work’ and ‘What’s My Name?’ He’s had 20 other Top 10 hits. Not bad for a Canadian.

I have to admit I don’t get most of Drake’s music. I’ve warmed to this song over time but only a little. But boy do my teenage daughter and her friends love it! I recently attended my wife’s high school prom (she’s a teacher, not a student) and when ‘God’s Plan’ played and reached the “I only love my bed and my momma, I’m sorry” part, the entire room screamed along in glorious unison. The same thing happens in the song’s official video.

The video, directed (like yesterday’s SOTD) by Karena Evans, shows Drake going on a charitable spending spree in Miami, donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities and individuals over the course of a few days.

[Intro]
Yeah, they wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’
They wishin’ on me, yuh

[Verse 1]
I been movin’ calm, don’t start no trouble with me
Tryna keep it peaceful is a struggle for me
Don’t pull up at 6 AM to cuddle with me
You know how I like it when you lovin’ on me
I don’t wanna die for them to miss me
Yes, I see the things that they wishin’ on me
Hope I got some brothers that outlive me
They gon’ tell the story, shit was different with me

[Chorus 1]
God’s plan, God’s plan
I hold back, sometimes I won’t, yuh
I feel good, sometimes I don’t, ayy, don’t
I finessed down Weston Road, ayy, ‘nessed
Might go down a G.O.D., yeah, wait
I go hard on Southside G, yuh, wait
I make sure that north-side eat

[Post-Chorus]
And still
Bad things
It’s a lot of bad things
That they wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’
They wishin’ on me
Bad things
It’s a lot of bad things
That they wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’
They wishin’ on me
Yuh, ayy, ayy

[Verse 2]
She said, “Do you love me?” I tell her, “Only partly”
I only love my bed and my momma, I’m sorry
Fifty Dub, I even got it tatted on me
81, they’ll bring the crashers to the party
And you know me
Turn the O2 into the O3, dog
Without 40, Oli, there’d be no me
Imagine if I never met the broskies

[Chorus 2]
God’s plan, God’s plan
I can’t do this on my own, ayy, no, ayy
Someone watchin’ this shit close, yep, close
I’ve been me since Scarlett Road, ayy, road, ayy
Might go down as G.O.D., yeah, wait
I go hard on Southside G, ayy, wait
I make sure that north-side eat, yuh

[Post-Chorus]
And still
Bad things
It’s a lot of bad things
That they wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’
They wishin’ on me
Yeah, yeah
Bad things
It’s a lot of bad things
That they wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’
They wishin’ on me
Yeah

Okay, as I said yesterday, I’m not a fan of Drake’s music, but it’s pretty hard not to be moved by this video and Drake’s support of the Black community in Miami. Good for him!

  2. Peg Clifton says:

    I agree. Heartwarming
