Song of the Day #3,515: ‘Today’s Teardrops’ – Fountains of Wayne

Fountains of Wayne followed up the success of its 2003 album Welcome Interstae Managers, and surprise hit single ‘Stacy’s Mom,’ with a double album called Out-of-State Plates, filled with odds and ends they’d amassed over their career to that point.

Albums like this are usually quick cash grabs or contract fillers, and this one is no exception. It is entirely unremarkable, featuring songs that were B-sides for good reasons.

The best moments, in fact, are covers of other bands’ music. Those include a live version of ELO’s ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head,’ a gentle rendition of Jackson Browne’s ‘These Days’ and a straight-faced delivery of Britney Spears’ ‘Baby One More Time.’

Also, today’s Random SOTD, ‘Today’s Teardrops,’ which was popularized by Roy Orbison and originally written and recorded by Gene Pitney.

Today’s teardrops are tomorrow’s rainbows
And tomorrow’s rainbows I will share
Share with you
So dry your eyes, little girl
Dry your eyes
We’re gonna see skies of blue

Had a tough time getting started
Maybe just a little downhearted
All you gotta do is count to ten
Maybe you’ll be smiling when…

Today’s teardrops are tomorrow’s rainbows
And tomorrow’s rainbows I will share
Share with you
So dry your eyes, little girl
Dry your eyes
We’re gonna see skies of blue

Gonna be just love and gladness
Don’t wanna hear nothing ’bout sadness
Come a little closer, come to me
With each kiss you’re gonna see

Today’s teardrops are tomorrow’s rainbows
And tomorrow’s rainbows I will share
Share with you
So dry your eyes, little girl
Dry your eyes
We’re gonna see skies of blue

Gonna be just love and gladness
Don’t wanna hear nothing ’bout sadness
Come a little closer, come to me
With each kiss you’re gonna see

Today’s teardrops are tomorrow’s rainbows
And tomorrow’s rainbows I will share
Share with you
So dry your eyes, little girl
Dry your eyes
We’re gonna see skies of blue

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I seem to recall hearing the Spears cover at some point. Have never heard today’s song including the previous versions. Rather corny, but catchy.
