Song of the Day #3,500: ‘Crowded Places’ – Banks

[Guest blogger Madison continues her look at the best use of music in 2017 television shows. She also has the honor of penning the blog’s 3,500th Song of the Day post!]

This list would not be complete without a song from the sixth and final season of Girls, a show which has beautifully coexisted with music throughout its entire run.

I get it, some of you may not like Lena Dunham and have been dismissive of this show because she is very much at the helm. Unfortunately, though this is one of the strongest final seasons of any show I’ve ever seen, Girls continued to be disregarded by award shows to the very end. I guess it falls to this simple guest blogger to give it the recognition it deserves.

Choosing which song from the season to feature today was no small task. Ultimately though, my decision was made easier when I played this powerful scene which ended the penultimate episode of Girls and my mother, a far more casual viewer, burst into tears. Those of you who know my mom know that she cries easily, but I knew her emotional response was justified because of the way this clip is put together to Banks’ careful, quiet song, ‘Crowded Places.’

Upon further research, I discovered that Banks actually wrote ‘Crowded Places’ for the final season of Girls and the track was produced by Dunham’s then-boyfriend, Jack Antonoff. This makes it all the more appropriate as a song that was inspired by the emotion of the series and elevated this scene in return.

‘Goodbye Tour’ is one of the best episodes of Girls. It is also the last episode to feature all of the girls together. Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) has found the man she will marry while, on the other end of the spectrum, Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is in the midst of a life reevaluation after her relationship with Adam (Adam Driver) has come to an end. The final episode of Girls, ‘Latching,’ looks ahead at Marnie (Allison Williams) attempting to help Hannah (Lena Dunham) raise her child in a suburban New York home. This makes the final scene of ‘Goodbye Tour’ all the more powerful as it cuts between Hannah’s final night with the people who shaped her as a young adult and her transition to a new home where she will raise her baby boy.

Thank you all for reading this week and thank you to Clay for allowing me to take the wheel for a bit. Hopefully at least one of these entries lead to a new song or show discovery or, at the very least, some added insight into my psyche.

[Intro]
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey

[Verse 1]
I wanna get you in my spaces
I wanna take you different places
I know the touring is romantic
I know you see me as a frantic girl
But I can give you what you want
I know you like the way I held my temper
When I gave you to the world, gave you to the world
I can be your heart to let go

[Chorus 1]
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
Come with me, I’ll take you home
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
Come with me, I’ll take you home

[Verse 2]
I know I messed with your head
It was just when I left you
When I was just blowing up when I said
Remember when I loved you right before that tour?
You said you didn’t want to see me anymore
And then when I got home when I played that show in L.A
All your shit was gone
It was the only time I thought I’d made a mistake
And when I only want to hold you
I thought I wanted you to hold me

[Chorus 1]
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
Come with me, I’ll take you home
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
Come with me, I’ll take you home

[Bridge]
It falls to death so talk with me
This life, what if it’s you and me?
Don’t know, oh no
Maybe that means we’ll fall from grace
It’d be ok, I’d have your face with me
You’ll see, you’ll see, you’ll see, you’ll see

[Chorus 2]
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
I’ve been scared of crowded places
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
I’ve been scared of crowded places
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
I’ve been scared of crowded places
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
I’ve been scared of crowded places
‘Cause I’ve been scared of crowded places
I’ve been scared of crowded places

[Outro]
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey

This is a very touching, well put together scene and a lovely accompanying song.

Thank you for guest blogging this week. Your posts were witty and insightful, just like you!😁

Few things in entertainment are as powerful as the winding down of a beloved television series. Saying goodbye to characters you’ve grown to love over years is never easy… the sheer amount of time spent in their world makes the parting more impactful than any movie.
I’ve never watched Girls, and I’m not a fan of Dunham, but even dropping in via a YouTube clip I can see that this was a special moment.
Thank you for taking the reins this week. I’ve enjoyed every one of your insightful posts, and I have a couple of new shows to place on my ever-growing must-watch list. 😀

  3. Peg says:

I never got into Girls either but I certainly agree this was a special moment to capture their farewell episode. Thank you for all your insights and music this week. They were also special moments ❤️

Glad I helped make your decision easier on this final post. I watched the first season of Girls and liked it quite a bit. Adam Driver and Lena Dunham were excellent foils for one another, and their final scene was touching. Still, it was Hannah’s relationship with these girls featured in today’s clip that was always the heart of the show. Loved being your guinea pig audience while you were selecting these songs and loved reading your posts this week. Maybe you’ll come back for songs 6;996 – 7:000. 🙂
