Song of the Day #3,491: ‘Annie’s Song’ – John Denver

Another favorite movie music moment from 2017 is from Bong Joon-ho’s Okja, and it’s the second example this week to feature a John Denver song.

In fact, by coincidence or cosmic fate, John Denver’s songs were featured in no fewer than five films last year, including the Kingsman and Alien sequels and the crime film Free Fire.

Okja is a twisted fantasy about a young girl and her superpig, part E.T. and part Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. It starts magnificently before going in dark, weird, preachy directions. For about the first half of the film, I thought I’d discovered a new classic, but sadly it loses its way.

The John Denver moment, however, comes right at Okja‘s peak, during a wildly inventive 15-minute chase scene through streets, tunnels and an underground mall. The effects work on Okja the superpig is amazing. As she rolls and tumbles into storefronts and people, you believe every painful crunch.

At one point, the action shifts into slow-motion as a group of animal rights activists shows up to help the wounded Okja. That’s where Denver’s classic ‘Annie’s Song’ kicks in, adding a note of tenderness to the absurdity. It continues through the end of the scene, though this clip cuts off after just a minute.

Check it out on NetFlix to see the whole scene, but I can’t vouch for the film’s second hour.

You fill up my senses
Like a night in a forest
Like a mountain in springtime
Like a walk in the rain

Like a storm in the desert
Like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses
Come fill me again

Come let me love you
Let me give my life to you
Let me drown in your laughter
Let me die in your arms

Let me lay down beside you
Let me always be with you
Come let me love you
Come love me again

Let me always be with you
Come let me love you
Come love me again

You fill up my senses
Like a night in a forest
Like a mountain in springtime
Like a walk in the rain

Like a storm in the desert
Like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses
Come fill me again

Completely agree with this review on Okja. My mom walked in just as I got to this scene and was intrigued by everything happening. I told her that it was a fantastic movie and later had to shift my stance when things took a sharp turn to the PETA PSA direction. Anyway, definitely a great scene of the year and kudos to Paul Dano for being stellar as usual.

I wonder if one or more of the directors of these movies became inspired to use Denver’s songs from the other movies. Maybe 2018 will feature 5 movies using Jim Croce.😊

I think I’ll take your word for it 😊

Love the use of music in this scene and was intrigued by the reception this film received. Even more, I love John Denver’s voice.
