Song of the Day #3,467: ‘Auld Lang Syne’ – The Cast

Like most Americans, it’s hard for me to look at 2017 as anything other than the first year of the disastrous Trump presidency, but I’ve had plenty of fond memories as well.

Good times with family and friends; good health; good travels; good movies, TV shows, books and music to enjoy. Another 366 blog entries with no plans to stop soon.

Enjoy your celebrations tonight. My family will ring in the New Year from a cruise ship through the Caribbean, so that will be a first.

I leave you with a rendition of the perennial classic ‘Auld Lang Syne,’ performed by Scottish folk band The Crew using the original Robert Burns text.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’lltak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup!
and surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin’ auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin’ auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
and gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak’ a right gude-willie waught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

    This has certainly been a hard year politically and personally as well. However, like you, I can find the good in 2017 as well -largely comprised of resistance, resilience and perseverance. Perhaps it is fitting that our family will spend the last day of the year bracing for freezing below-zero weather, but going through it together as a family as we always do, making the best of a difficult situation, finding the good and fun, surviving and thriving.

    So here’s to putting 2017 behind us and looking forward to 2018, which should see our daughter officially graduating from college and launching her career, our son wrapping up high school and looking toward the next chapter in his life by applying to colleges,the inaugural trip of Amy’s Birthright America and ending with a Democratic sweep of the election and impeachment, indictment or resignation (or all of the above) for our so-called president.

    Yes to all of the above! And thank you for this lovely version of a favorite song. Here’s to at least a cup of kindness in 2018…
