We go from songs about drugs and alcohol to a much nicer topic on Day Nine of the 30 Day Music Challenge. Today’s task is to name ‘A Song That Makes You Happy.’
If you had told me six months ago I’d be choosing an Eagles song for this category, I would have called you crazy. Back then the band would more likely show up under ‘A Song You Think is Overrated’ or ‘A Song By a Popular Band You Dislike’ (those aren’t real categories, as far as I know, but they could be).
But my opinion about the Eagles did a 180 a few months back after I spent some time with their early albums and realized all of my animosity toward the band was centered on Hotel California, both the album and the song. Still not a fan of that one, but the rest I’ve come to love.
And I love no Eagles song so much as ‘Peaceful Easy Feeling,’ which I’ve asked my Amazon Echo to play about a thousand times. It sets my mind at ease and, yes, makes me happy. Also, the opening verse reminds me of my own brown-skinned wife, with whom I recently spent two weeks in the Utah desert with a million stars all around.
Against your skin so brown
And I want to sleep with you in the desert night
With a million stars all around
I got a peaceful easy feelin’
And I know you won’t let me down
Cause I’m already standin’
On the ground
And I found out a long time ago
What a woman can do to your soul
Aw but she can’t take you any way
You don’t already know how to go
I get a peaceful easy feelin’
And I know you won’t let me down
Cause I’m already standin’
On the ground
{Instrumental}
I get this feelin’ I may know you
As a lover and a friend
This voice keeps whisperin’ in my other ear
Tells me I may never see you again
I get a peaceful easy feelin’
And I know you won’t let me down
Cause I’m already standin’
Yes I’m already standin’
Yes I’m already standin’
On the ground
A great song to start the day with! I appreciated The Eagles differently after I watched a great documentary about them last year. Thank you for writing this post.
Boy, I could pick so many tracks that make me happy. I’ll go with XTC’s “Mayor of Simpleton”, a track I’ve always loved. It’s just so poppy and fun it’s impossible to not like it.
Great song!
Off topic, commercial break: Tomorrow release of “Hallelujah Anyhow”, the new Hiss Golden Messenger album (Tift adds background vocals), next week release of “This Sweet Old World”, Lucinda recorded the whole album again, 25 years later๐!
We keep asking echo to play Nina Simone’s Feeling Good I guess cause it makes us happy ๐
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kSQdRz-HlJw So many good options for this category, but I think this has been my go-to for the longest ๐
:). It makes me happy that you picked this song, a family favorite!
It’s so funny how different our feelings are about The Eagles. I like the Henley songs, including those on Hotel California, and generally don’t care for the Frey songs, including the one you feature today.
But to the topic at hand, there are so many songs that make me happy. Indeed, we heard many of them today playing our PCH playlist while driving around LA such as CeeLo Green’s “Forget You,” Joe Jackson’s “Cha Cha Loco” and Randy Newman’s “I Love LA.” However, I’m going to go with one of the first songs that came to mind this morning, which was Van Morrison’s” “Brown Eyed Girl.” Hard to be in or stay in a bad mood when this one comes on.
Lots of songs I could choose for this topic, but I’m opting for a long-time favorite. This one always makes me happy.
