Song of the Day #3,363: ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ – Michael Jackson

Getting back to the 30 Day Music Challenge, today’s task is to name ‘A Song That Makes You Want To Dance.’ Lots of great candidates here.

I quickly chose to go with a Michael Jackson tune, and then had to decide which one. While Thriller is a pop/R&B juggernaut, I consider Off the Wall a much better funk/dance album. And opening track ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ is the funkiest, danciest track of them all.

I guess I’m not alone in that opinion. DJ Cassidy (a New York DJ who performed at Barack Obama’s birthday and inauguration, as well as the wedding of Beyoncé and Jay Z) had this to say about today’s SOTD:

This is not my favorite Michael Jackson song. It is not the one I would listen to if I was stuck on an island and I had to keep one song on repeat. But it is the greatest dance song ever recorded. It electrifies the dance floor like no other song. There is no number two. Every song strives to have that something you can’t explain, but this one does it best. Any party around the world playing any genre of music from hip hop to electronic music to anything in between could play this song, and any kind of person in any city in any country would feel it.

[Intro]
You know, I was
I was wondering, you know
If you could keep on
Because the force
It’s got a lot of power
And it make me feel like ah
It make me feel like… oooh!

[Verse 1]
Lovely is the feeling now
Fever, temperatures rising now
Power is the force the vow
That makes it happen, it asks no questions why
So get closer
To my body now
Just love me
Till you don’t know how

[Chorus]
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough

[Bridge]

[Verse 2]
Touch me and I feel on fire
Ain’t nothing like a love desire
I’m melting (I’m melting)
Like hot candle wax sensation
Lovely where we’re at
So let love take us through the hours
I won’t be complaining
Cause this is love power

[Chorus]
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough

[Verse 3]
Heartbreak enemy despise
Eternal
Love shines in my eyes
So let love take us through the hours
I won’t be complaining
Cause your love is alright, alright

[Chorus]
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough

Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough

[Refrain]
Lovely is the feeling now I won’t be complaining
The force is love power

[Chorus]
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough

Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough
Keep on with the force don’t stop
Don’t stop ’til you get enough

Admittedly I’ve been thriving in Mamma Mia mode recently (and Magic Mike, so “Pony” came to mind as well), but this is such an ultimate dance anthem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFrGuyw1V8s

Given how much I love to dance (Not!), this should be an easy category for me. The one song, however, that keeps coming to mind is the epitome of the disco movement: “Stayin’ Alive” by the BeeGees. It’s hard for even me to not want to get up at a wedding and try to do my best Travolta impersonation when this song is played.

  3. Peg Clifton says:

Well I hate to use the same song twice but I have to dance when Elvis sings Burnin Love. ALso love to dance to Springsteen’s Cover Me

  4. Amy says:

So many great songs from which to choose. I remember having to dance to Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love and Prince’s Kiss during my college years, so they are two serious contenders. Still, the first song that came to mind was the one I listened to on mom and dad’s old reel to reel when I was a young teenage, and I danced every time and still do today …

  5. Rob says:

Whenever “Footloose” was played at any of the many Montreal clubs I attended in the 80’s, I was out on the dancefloor, doin’ my “Springsteen Shuffle”.
