Song of the Day #3,360: ‘Welcome to the Jungle (Live)’ – Guns N’ Roses

Closing out week one of the 30 Day Music Challenge, our mission today is to name ‘A Song That Needs To Be Played Loud.’ Certainly many songs fit the bill, but I’m trying to go with the first thing that occurs to me for each of these categories. And the first thing that occurred to me for this one was Guns N’ Roses’ classic ‘Welcome to the Jungle.’

This is a song that needn’t be played at all if it isn’t played loud. It was named the best hard rock song of all time by VH1, and the best hard rock songs need to be played at 11.

The first time this song was featured on my blog, it was in a wonderful guest post by my wife. Today’s version is a live performance which starts with Axl Rose explaining the origin of one of the song’s more memorable sections.

Turn up your speakers, enjoy the song, then let us know your favorite song to play at maximum volume.

Welcome to the jungle
We got fun ‘n’ games
We got everything you want
Honey we know the names
We are the people that can find
Whatever you may need
If you got the money honey
We got your disease
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your shun na,na,na,na,na,na,na,na,knees, knees
I wanna watch you Bleed

Welcome to the jungle
We take it day by day
If you want you’re gonna bleed
But it’s the price you pay
And you’re a very sexy girl
Very hard to please
You can taste the bright lights
But you won’t get there for free
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Feel my, my, my, my serpentine
I, I wanna hear you scream

Welcome to the jungle
It gets worse here everyday
Ya learn to live like an animal
In the jungle where we play
If you got a hunger for what you see
You’ll take it eventually
You can have anything you want
But you better not take it from me

In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your shun na,na,na,na,na,na,na,na,knees, knees
I’m gonna watch you plead

And when you’re high you never
Ever want to come down, so down, so down, so down YEAH!!!!!

YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE?!?!
You’re in the jungle baby!!!!
You’re gonna die
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your shun,na,na,na,na,na,na,na,na,knees, knees
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Feel my, my, my, my serpentine
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your shun,na,na,na,na,na,na,na,na,knees, knees
Down in the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your
It’s gonna bring you down!
HUH!

There are, undoubtedly, a number of hard rock/heavy metal songs that come to mind from my youth that could be featured here from KISS’ “Detroit Rock City” to Van Halen’s “Jamie’s Crying” to AC/DC’s “Back in Black” to Led Zepplin’s “Kashmir.” Then there are the funky songs like Prince’s “Kiss” or great songs from favorite artists like Billy Joel’s “only the Good Die Young” or “Big Man on Mulberry Street.” So many to choose from! Generally, though, the volume goes the loudest when I’m in the car, usually alone, and often on a longer road trip. For those moments, there are a handful of songs that are required volume up listening and the leader of the pack for years has been Tom Petty’s “Running Down a Dream.” So, “hello, CD listeners….” Turn up the volume (preferably in a car) and enjoy….

Thank you for the link to Alex’s original post. I got to start the day with a good cry. 🙂 ❤️❤️❤️ And we certainly enjoyed that roller coaster intro!

Phew… Tons of hard rock play it loud music… I always liked Axel Rose… Deep Purple, Led Zep, the early Queen, Nazareth, AC/DC, Pro-Pain, Ted Nugent (I admit, sorry), Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Thin Lizzy… Recently I listened to a song that I still like to be played very loud. As loud as I can. Not Hard Rock, but I like the spirit (although I don’t want to be tattooed): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkleKuAshLA&feature=share.

I’m going to share two songs, as each represents a different kind of song I’m likely to blast. The first are those songs I don’t own or ever seek out but when they come on the radio, I invariably turn up the volume and sing along ( at least to the chorus). These are songs I love in those moments but never think about other than during the length of the song. This was the first of those songs that came to mind:

The second group of songs I blast are those that have an impact on me for a period of time based more on how I’m feeling in my life than the song itself. A year before or a year later, the song might not even be left on the radio let alone be turned up to 11. However, during the time it’s serving its purpose, it’s going to get played on repeat and loudly. As I’m preparing to embark on a new career, the timing of this single was perfect, so I’m choosing it to represent category #2:

First song I thought of, usually turned up loud for practical reasons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvDPezXTzlI

Easy-Peasy. “Mercury Blues” by David Lindley. Whenever we played this in my band, all amps went to “11”.
