Song of the Day #3,275: ‘Begin Again’ – Taylor Swift vs. Tom Petty

Two of the more compelling Round One Montauk Madness matchups pitted pop (and pop culture) sensations Beyoncé and Taylor Swift against Tom Petty and David Byrne, respectively.

Petty won his battle in one of the closest Round One contests, picking up 56% of the vote. Swift had an easier time dispatching Byrne, netting 88%. Now they face off against each other.

It would have been interesting to see how Beyoncé and Taylor Swift would have fared against each other, rather than the old timers they drew. My guess is that Beyoncé would have taken it pretty convincingly. So by that logic, I’m assuming Petty, the Beyoncé Slayer, will take down Swift as well.

That’s how I’m voting, anyway.

[Verse 1]
Took a deep breath in the mirror
He didn’t like it when I wore high heels
But I do
Turn the lock and put my headphones on
He always said he didn’t get this song
But I do, I do

Walked in expecting you’d be late
But you got here early and you stand and wave
I walk to you
You pull my chair out and help me in
And you don’t know how nice that is
But I do

[Chorus]
And you throw your head back laughing
Like a little kid
I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny cause
He never did
I’ve been spending the last 8 months
Thinking all love ever does
Is break and burn and end
But on a Wednesday in a cafe
I watched it begin again

[Verse 2]
You said you never met one girl who
Had as many James Taylor records as you
But I do
We tell stories and you don’t know why
I’m coming off a little shy
But I do

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
And we walked down the block, to my car
And I almost brought him up
But you start to talk about the movies
That your family watches every single Christmas
And I want to talk about that
And for the first time
What’s past is past

[Chorus + Outro]

I would not be so sure that Beyoncé would have slayed the formidably talented Swift in Round 1 or that Petty will defeat Swift here, particularly if the strong voting block of the Gallup family has enough influence on the results. I can tell you that I’ve been lobbied for the past few days by the rest of my family to vote Swift over Petty and, at least within our circles, this vote is being as closely monitored and portrayed as a bellwether for the fate of women candidates in the overall contest as the Georgia special election.

Notwithstanding the considerable internal pressure and the implications of this vote on the overall approval of Trump…er, I mean male artists, I am going to go with Petty, who has been one of my favorite artists for decades.

I will be returning to a cold home tonight.😄

This is a “no-brainer” for me. While I certainly recognize Taylor Swift’s talents, she is no match for Tom Petty. The man’s work is enormous, and consistently solid. It’s hard to compare 40 years of work against 13 years of work. Will she still be relevant 27 years from now? Tough to say …

So I’m guessing this doesn’t include “American Girl” since that was recorded by the Heartbreakers, correct?

  5. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

Previously I had said that Adam Duritz was the 3rd best lyricist of all time, Taylor Swift in my opinion is #4. Her body of work sprawling Country, Genre, and occasionally rock (the biting and ingeniously crafted “Better than Revenge”). This is where I feel that becoming a mainstream artist has her. Just because she’s a star now people automatically feel a need to chop her down or assume that she’s not as talented just because she’s popular. I’m sure many of the more classic rock lovers and those who are far more interested in indie artists and try to actively avoid the radio on this blog will try to paint her as a pop artist and a passing fad. However, perhaps this harsher truth is that Taylor Swift manages to still be the most well known female artist right now and has made some of the best songs ever written.

If you listen to the songs throughout all of her discography you’ll find that she manages to express stories better than any other artist. Her ability to perfectly capture a feeling always backed up by meticulously crafted music with perfect string swells.

I love Tom Petty. Full Moon Fever is an amazing album. Wildflowers is an amazing album. However, in the end Taylor Swift is an icon. She’ll be remembered past 27 years. In fact she’ll probably be remembered for 100s of years. She is one of the best artists of all time. If she of all people doesn’t continue in this female deprived competition where I beleive she’ll be one of 3 left that would be a shame. I strongly encourage all to override this classic rocker (whom I love) and vote Swift.
