Song of the Day #3,232: ‘The One I Love’ – R.E.M. vs. Stew

I opted for random seeding in Montauk Madness, but the other avenue is to seed each particpant based on stature. That’s how March Madness works, with the #1 teams (based on record) facing off against the #16 teams in Round One.

That prevents any heavyweight matchups early in the contest. Ideally, you don’t want the two best teams in a division to battle on Day One.

Going that route in this contest, however, felt wrong. If I were to rank the participants before even setting the bracket, wouldn’t I be defeating the purpose of the game? If a top contender loses in Round One because of an unlucky matchup, well, that probably would have happened in Round Three of Four anyway.

Anyway, all that to say that today’s matchup, between alternative legends R.E.M. and indie artist Stew, is the sort of #1 vs. #16 face-off we would have seen more of had I gone with traditional seeding.

I don’t mean to imply that Stew isn’t worthy. I love his work. But he simply doesn’t have the volume or consistency of output of R.E.M. The Athens quartet (and later trio) went out with a bit of a whimper, but I’d stack their first decade and a half against anybody’s.

R.E.M. it is.

[Verse]
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I’ve left behind
A simple prop to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love

[Chorus]
Fire!
Fire!

[Verse]
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I’ve left behind
A simple prop to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love

[Chorus]
Fire! (she’s comin’ down on her own, now)
Fire! (she’s comin’ down on her own, now)

[Solo]

[Verse]
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I’ve left behind
Another prop has occupied my time
This one goes out to the one I love

[Chorus]
Fire (she’s comin’ down on her own, now)
Fire (she’s comin’ down on her own, now)
Fire (she’s comin’ down on her own, now)
Fire (she’s comin’ down on her own, now)

  1. Dana says:

    Easy call. R.E.M.

  2. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

From what my parents have told me about how revolutionary REM was at the time and how it felt like they had discovered them I do have a bias towards them. That bias is supported by their amazing music whether it be funky or muttering alternative songs of passion. REM may or may not be one of the best bands ever but it is definitely one of the coolest bands.

  3. Amy says:

R.E.M. was the perfect college band in the 80’s, and listening to any of their songs places me in an emotional time machine. This band will be able to defeat far worthier opponents than Stew.
