Our next match-up in Round One of Montauk Madness pits the legendary Frank Sinatra against the tragically under-appreciated singer-songwriter Tift Merritt. A no-brainer, right? I agree… Tift Merritt advances.
Sinatra acolytes (like my parents) will scoff at this choice, I’m sure. But as much as I love Sinatra’s voice, and his interpretation of classic songs on such albums as Only the Lonely, Songs For Swingin’ Lovers, In the Wee Small Hours and Watertown, I find it hard to vote for a non-songwriter over an excellent and prolific one.
In addition to her excellent songwriting skills, Merritt herself is a stellar vocalist. Just check out today’s SOTD, from her debut album Bramble Rose, which shows off her many talents.
Vote now for the performer you believe should win this round.
I know you think that I’m just a stranger
Just a drinker he’s seen downtown
Someone he’d wave to on his way to meet you
But I know him too
Better than a “how you been?”
Oh, better than I wish I did
When you dance where I can see
I know you think you know him better
Wait a little longer, I know him too
I guess no one told you nobody can hold him
I guess his whispers still sound true
And his secrets, they’re still the same
As the ones I knew
Better than a “how you been?”
Oh, better than I wish I did
When you dance where I can see
I know you think you know him better
Wait a little longer, I know him too
Better than a “how you been?”
Oh, better than I wish I did
When you dance where I can see
I know you think you know him better
Wait a little longer, I know him too
Better than his “how you been?”
Oh, better than I wish I did
Go on, dance where I can see
Tonight you love him cause no one can tell him
Tonight no one can tell you
The way your eyes shine, soon they’ll be like mine
Cryin’ cause I know him too
Better than a “how you been?”
Oh, better than I wish I did
When you dance where I can see
I know you think you know him better
Wait a little longer, I know him too
I know you think you know him better
Wait a little longer, I know him too
In reviewing the matchups last night, my wife and son (your sister and nephew) were amused by this seemingly imbalanced pairing and were confident that even a Merritt fan like you (one of twelve in the known universe including her family and manager) would pick Sinatra here. I told them you wouldn’t and I was right.
Unless you manipulate the votes like the Russians did to our election, I assume you will be saying goodbye to Tift here.
https://youtu.be/S0Tzfi5iLwc For your enjoyment… one of my very favorite film scenes set to one of the many Sinatra songs I love.
Thank you Amy. Love it
This cannot be a serious choice! I am speechless
I’m gonna have to go with Peg on this one, Clay.
Frank Sinatra made this trailer somehow even more epic, so he’s winning in my book 😛 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Nxc-3WpMbg
LOL. Although that may be one of Frank’s worst songs:)
I mean they made it work
Faithful members of the glorious “Merritt 12” have no choice here, sorry Mr. Sinatra. Солидарность! 🙂
