Song of the Day #3,089: ‘I Won’t Share You’ – The Smiths

strangewaysIt’s one of my favorite things, when a special occasion falls on a Random Weekend!

Today is my parents’ wedding anniversary, so I hope when I spin the dial I turn up something romantic — a celebration of love that endures over time.

Or we could end up with something by Ozzy Osbourne. That’s the beauty of this game! So here it goes: Mom and Dad, your anniversary song is…

‘I Won’t Share You’ by The Smiths.

The title sounds vaguely romantic, but this is actually a song about choosing your own ambitions over a loved one. So not the best anniversary song.

But Happy Anniversary, anyway!

[Hook #1]
I won’t share you, no
I won’t share you
With the drive
And ambition
The zeal I feel
This is my time

[Verse 1]
The note I wrote
As she read, she said
“Has the Perrier gone
Straight to my head
Or is life sick and cruel, instead?”
“Yes!”
No – no – no – no – no – no
No – no – no – no – no – no
Oh…

[Hook #2]
I won’t share you, no
I won’t share you
With the drive
And the dreams inside
This is my time

[Verse 2]
Life tends to come and go
That’s okay
As long as you know
Life tends to come and go
As long as you know
Know, know, know, know, know
Know, know, know, know
Oh…

[Hook #2]

[Verse 3]
I want the freedom and I want the guile
I want the freedom and the guile
Oh, life tends to come and go
As long as you know
Know, know, know, know
Know, know, know, know
Oh…

[Hook #3]
I won’t share you, no
I won’t share you
I’ll see you somewhere
I’ll see you sometime
Darling…

I’m never going to warm up to that voice, but I still wish Peg and Doug a happy anniversary.

Thanks for all your good wishes 🙂
