Song of the Day #3,015: ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’ – Adele

adele-25Rounding out Billboard’s top ten this week is ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover),’ the latest single from Adele’s smash hit 25.

Though Adele destroyed every album sales record with the release of 25, it doesn’t seem like that record has permeated the culture. Compare it to Beyoncé’s Lemonade, which sold far fewer copies but dominated the conversation for months.

25 dropped a little less than a year ago, with lead single ‘Hello’ crushing all records. But second single ‘When We Were Young’ climbed only as high as #22 on Billboard’s Hot 100. This one is faring better than that, but I don’t exactly hear it pouring from car radios and department store speakers.

Don’t get me wrong, Adele is far from struggling. Her concerts sell out in minutes and she remains universally admired. This just isn’t much of a singles album.

[Intro]
Just the guitar?
Okay, cool

[Verse 1]
This was all you, none of it me
You put your hands on, on my body and told me
Mmm, told me you were ready
For the big one, for the big jump
I’d be your last love, everlasting, you and me
Mmm, that was what you told me

[Pre-Chorus]
I’m giving you up
I’ve forgiven it all
You set me free

[Chorus]
Send my love to your new lover
Treat her better
We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts
We both know we ain’t kids no more
Send my love to your new lover
Treat her better
We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts
We both know we ain’t kids no more

[Verse 2]
I was too strong, you were trembling
You couldn’t handle the hot heat rising (rising)
Mmm, baby, I’m still rising
I was running, you were walking
You couldn’t keep up, you were falling down (down)
Mmm, there’s only one way down

[Pre-Chorus]
I’m giving you up
I’ve forgiven it all
You set me free, oh

[Chorus]
Send my love to your new lover
Treat her better
We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts
We both know we ain’t kids no more
Send my love to your new lover
Treat her better
We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts
We both know we ain’t kids no more

[Bridge]
If you’re ready, if you’re ready
If you’re ready, I am ready
If you’re ready, if you’re ready
We both know we ain’t kids no more
No, we ain’t kids no more

[Pre-Chorus]
I’m giving you up
I’ve forgiven it all
You set me free

[Chorus]
Send my love to your new lover
Treat her better
We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts
We both know we ain’t kids no more
Send my love to your new lover
Treat her better
We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts
We both know we ain’t kids no more

[Outro]
If you’re ready, if you’re ready
(Send my love to your new lover)
If you’re ready, are you ready?
(Treat her better)
We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts
We both know we ain’t kids no more
If you’re ready, if you’re ready
(Send my love to your new lover)
If you’re ready, are you ready?
(Treat her better)
We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts
We both know we ain’t kids no more

I think Adele enjoys a quieter success because her audience skews older. The music is playing in the cars, but you can’t hear it from outside because the volume is lower and the windows are up. Frankly, it’s amazing she has had as much chart success since those charts are largely dominated by artists targeting and appealing to the under 30 demographic.
