Song of the Day #2,973: ‘So High’ – John Legend

john_legendI like John Legend as a man, a philanthropist and political activist. I like his voice and admire his musical talent.

But damn it if I’m not bored to tears by everything he’s recorded.

I think it’s just not my genre. I can’t think of any “adult contemporary R&B” artists (as AllMusic classifies him) who float my boat.

So I’m doomed to write about another of his boring songs every year or so when he pops up on Random Weekends.

See you in 2017, John Legend!

Verse 1]
Baby since the day you came into my life
You made me realize that we were born to fly
You showed me everyday new possibilities
You proved my fantasy of love could really be

[Bridge]
Let’s go to a place only lovers go
To a spot that we’ve never known
To the top of the clouds we’re floating away yeah

[Chorus]
Ooh this feels so crazy
Oh this love is blazing
And baby we’re so high
Walking on cloud 9
(You’ve got me up so high) So high
(My shoes are scraping the sky) So high
(You’ve got me up so high) Oh
(My shoes are scraping the sky)

[Verse 2]
Maybe later we can go up to the moon
Or sail among the stars before the night is through
And when morning comes we’ll see the sun is not so far
And we can’t get much closer to God than where we are

[Bridge] + [Chorus]

Ooh…yeah
Ooh…oh hey

[Chorus]

[Outro]
This is how love’s supposed to be
This is how, this is how love’s supposed to be, yeah
Let’s go to the moon baby, ooh
Let’s go to the moon baby, yeah
Let’s go, go, let’s go to the moon baby
So high…

I don’t see where Legend is so much different than Al Green, who you seem to like far better.

I too though am not all that drawn to Legend’s music. It’s probabably the lack of edge in his sound, including his voice. I did like, however, his recent contribution to “Southside with You:”

I’m not a big Al Green fan, but to the extent I like his music better, I think it’s because of the 60s Stax/Memphis soul sound that I really enjoy.
