Song of the Day #2,965: ‘Sex and Dying in High Society’ – X

x_los_angelesMy week of 1980 albums by groups I’ve never heard turned out to be a theme week on punk rock. Fortunately, the last band featured seems to be the best of the bunch, though that isn’t saying much.

X is a Los Angeles punk band that formed in the late 70s and released their debut album, fittingly titled Los Angeles, in 1980. They recorded regularly throughout the 80s before splitting late in the decade. They reunited a couple of times after that, releasing one more studio album in 1993.

Los Angeles is widely considered not only their best work but one of the defining albums of the genre.

I hear more variety and nuance in these songs than in much of what I’ve sampled this week, but on the whole, it still exhibits the qualities of punk rock that drive me away. Namely, lots of noisy guitars and shouted vocals.

Next week I’ll highlight my final batch of 1980 albums, none of which are by punk bands. I can’t wait.

You start it out that way
You’d do anything to stay
And keep your money, boys
Made of silver and gold
And keep your Pekingese
Turkish cigarettes
And your lighter that looks just like a gun
So you married your daddy
With a different name

[Chorus]
Sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society
That pretty man of yours
Hiding inside the director’s clothes
The one who calls you dear
After banging away at you in the night
That one’s just got to go
Every time you look at him
You could almost fall asleep
And there’s a masturbating
Getting underneath your belt

[Chorus]
Sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society

And now you tell the maid
To burn you on your virgin back
With a curling iron
Hotter than hot!
You say it’s good enough
You say it’s good enough
You say it’s good enough
You say your pain is better
Than any kind of love

[Chorus]
That’s sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society
Sex and dying in high society
