Few things get me quite as giddy as the prospect of new music from Miranda Lambert. And given the high-profile break-up of her marriage to fellow country superstar Blake Shelton, her next album promises to be a doozy.
Will she be in full hell-on-heels mode, seeking unholy revenge like the heroine of one of her early country-rock songs? Or will she be resigned and defeated, like in ‘Dead Flowers,’ where she achingly sang that “he ain’t feeling anything… my love, my hurt or the sting of this rain?”
If newly released track ‘Vice’ is any indication, it’s neither of those. This is a mournful song, to be sure, but it’s not aimed at Blake Shelton or anybody else. It’s about her own insecurities and flaws. Those looking for clues about the split could well conclude that Lambert was not the betrayed but the betrayer. Is she crawling out of “another bed… at 7 a.m. with shoes in [her] hand” before or after her divorce?
Or maybe it’s not autobiographical at all, but knowing how anticipated this record is, the theme and mood are no doubt intentional.
No word yet on when fans can expect a full album release, but this first single has certainly whet my appetite. Lambert could be describing ‘Vice’ in the intro: “When it hurts this good you gotta play it twice.”
Sting of the needle dropping on a vinyl
Neon singer with a jukebox title full of heartbreak
33, 45, 78
When it hurts this good you gotta play it twice
Another vice
[Verse 1]
All dressed up in a pretty black label
Sweet salvation on a dining room table
Waiting on me
Where the numb meets the lonely
It’s gone before it ever melts the ice
Another vice
[Chorus 1]
Another call, another bed I shouldn’t crawl out of
At 7AM with shoes in my hand
Said I wouldn’t do it, but I did it again
And I know I’ll be back tomorrow night, oh
[Verse 2]
I’ll wear a town like a leather jacket
When the new wears off, I don’t even pack it
If you need me
I’ll be where my reputation don’t proceed me
Maybe I’m addicted to goodbyes
Another vice
[Chorus 2]
Another town, where my past can’t run me down
Another life, another call, another bed I shouldn’t crawl out of
At 7AM with shoes in my hand
Said I wouldn’t do it, but I did it again
And I know I’ll be gone tomorrow night
Mmm, another vice
[Verse 3]
Standing at the sink now, looking at the mirror
Don’t know where I am or how I got here
Well the only thing that I know how to find
Is another vice
[Outro]
Mmm another vice
Yes, another vice
Ooh, another vice
Another vice
Another vice
Another vice
Hmm..sounds like a confession to me.😄
Me too
