Song of the Day #2,855: ‘A Thousand Years’ – Sting

sting_brand_new_dayI’ve posted only five Sting songs over the years, and two of those were ‘Englishman in New York.’ As I posted in my first ‘Englishman in New York’ Song of the Day entry, the guy just generally bugs me. He’s a major talent, no doubt, but I can’t spent a lot of time listening to him.

The post linked above led to a lively discussion about artists who rub you the wrong way, including my sister’s confession that she hates my beloved Fiona Apple. Good reading.

A thousand years, a thousand more,
A thousand times a million doors to eternity
I may have lived a thousand lives, a thousand times
An endless turning stairway climbs
To a tower of souls
If it takes another thousand years, a thousand wars,
The towers rise to numberless floors in space
I could shed another million tears, a million breaths,
A million names but only one truth to face

A million roads, a million fears
A million suns, ten million years of uncertainty
I could speak a million lies, a million songs,
A million rights, a million wrongs in this balance of time
But if there was a single truth, a single light
A single thought, a singular touch of grace
Then following this single point, this single flame,
The single haunted memory of your face
I still love you
I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
Like galaxies in my head

I may be numberless, I may be innocent
I may know many things, I may be ignorant
Or I could ride with kings and conquer many lands
Or win this world at cards and let it slip my hands
I could be cannon food, destroyed a thousand times
Reborn as fortune’s child to judge another’s crimes
Or wear this pilgrim’s cloak, or be a common thief
I’ve kept this single faith, I have but one belief
I still love you
I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
Like galaxies in my head
On and on the mysteries unwind themselves
Eternities still unsaid
‘Til you love me

  1. Dana says:

With the recent passing of Prince, I realized that, while I loved Prince in the 80s and into the 90s, I had not followed his music in the 20+ years since, and, given the focus of Prince tributes, I don’t think I missed all that much.

Not that I wish ill will on Sting, but, like Prince, I loved his music 20+ years ago, but haven’t really thought much about him or followed him since. I suspect that, if and when Sting dies, the focus will be on his work with the Police and the time period when I was paying attention to his music.

Now Peg, please don’t make any comment as to Sting dying because you’re powers of nudging otherwise healthy celebrities
    into premature death is legendary.
