Song of the Day #2,794: ‘Love Yourself’ – Justin Bieber

justin_bieber_love_yourselfThe Justin Bieber comeback is in full swing, the Canadian pop star having weathered his rough patch to once again dominate the charts. He sits at #2 with today’s SOTD, ‘Love Yourself,’ and will show up again before the week is out.

‘Love Yourself’ is seemingly a kiss-off track aimed at Bieber’s former flame, Selena Gomez, who has a tattoo reading “love yourself first.”

The tracks was co-written by Ed Sheeran and, listening to it, I have to assume Bieber’s contribution was the title. This sound very much like an Ed Sheeran song. I like it.

[Verse 1]
For all the times that you rained on my parade
And all the clubs you get in using my name
You think you broke my heart, oh girl for goodness sake
You think I’m crying on my own, well I ain’t

[Pre-Chorus]
And I didn’t wanna write a song
Cause I didn’t want anyone thinking I still care
I don’t but, you still hit my phone up
And baby I’ll be movin’ on
And I think it should be somethin’
That I don’t wanna hold back
Maybe you should know that
My mama don’t like you and she likes everyone
And I never like to admit that I was wrong
And I’ve been so caught up in my job, didn’t see what’s going on
And now I know, I’m better sleeping on my own

[Chorus]
Cause if you like the way you look that much
Oh baby you should go and love yourself
And if you think that I’m still holdin’ on to somethin’
You should go and love yourself

[Verse 2]
But when you told me that you hated my friends
The only problem was with you and not them
And every time you told me my opinion was wrong
And tried to make me forget where I came from

[Pre-Chorus]
And I didn’t wanna write a song
Cause I didn’t want anyone thinking I still care
I don’t but, you still hit my phone up
And baby I’ll be movin’ on
And I think it should be somethin’
That I don’t wanna hold back
Maybe you should know that
My mama don’t like you and she likes everyone
And I never like to admit that I was wrong
And I’ve been so caught up in my job, didn’t see what’s going on
And now I know, I’m better sleeping on my own

[Chorus]
Cause if you like the way you look that much
Oh baby you should go and love yourself
And if you think that I’m still holdin’ on to somethin’
You should go and love yourself

[Bridge]
For all the times you made me feel small
I fell in love, now I feel nothin’ at all
I never felt so low when I was vulnerable
Was I a fool to let you break down my walls?

[Chorus]
Cause if you like the way you look that much
Oh baby you should go and love yourself
And if you think that I’m still holdin’ on to somethin’
You should go and love yourself
Cause if you like the way you look that much
Oh baby you should go and love yourself
And if you think that I’m still holdin’ on to somethin’
You should go and love yourself

Our family loved this song from the first time we heard it after Daniel had bought the Bieber album. We immediately heard the Sheeran influence and quickly confirmed that he had co-written the song. I had predicted that it would be a huge hit before it was released as a single. Not really a hard prediction to make though.

In addition to being musically interesting, it is lyrically brilliant. A few weeks ago Lin Manuel Miranda tweeted how flat out amazing the line “My mama don’t like you and she likes everyone” is, saying: Love or hate Bieber, “My mama don’t like you, and she likes everyone” is a CRAZY good lyric. So simple, & it paints a whole world.” And I think we can all agree that Lin knows a great lyric when he sees one. One of his followers then told him that Sheeran had co-written the song, to which Lynn responded, “Did he really? Well props to him. Gatdamn what a lyric.”

By the way, I believe you dismissed Sheeran early on as a one note/style artist you were confusing at the time with Passage. I think you really missed the boat on Sheeran. He is a formidable and diverse talented artist, well worth your time in listening to his albums.

I think somebody else made the Passenger comparison. I’m aware of Sheeran’s diversity of styles and I like him well enough. His music just hasn’t entered into my regular rotation for whatever reason. But I do like what I’ve heard.
