Song of the Day #2,778: ‘Mother Stands For Comfort’ – Kate Bush

kate_bush_hounds_of_loveI’m surprised that this is the first track from Kate Bush’s 1985 album Hounds of Love I’ve featured on the blog. Through nearly 3,000 songs, I would have expected at least the great ‘Running Up That Hill’ to have its moment in the spotlight.

The truth is, I’ve only really gotten into the first handful of songs on the record, but they’re all great. Perhaps my favorite of all of them is today’s random selection, ‘Mother Stands For Comfort.’

The song has such an ominous, sultry mood. I don’t go for this sort of thing in large doses, but a one-off like this is just right.

Hearing this song decades after I first discovered it, now a father of two girls, I find the lyrics more disturbing. Both your mother and I mind very much that you’re lying, young lady!

I just read that the song is actually sung from the perspective of a young man, a murderer, whose mother is protecting him. Lovely.

She knows that I’ve been
Doing something wrong
But she won’t say anything
She thinks that I was
With my friends yesterday
But she won’t mind me lying

Because Mother stands for comfort
Mother, hide the murderer

It breaks the cage and fear escapes
And takes possession
Just like a crowd rioting inside
Make me do this, make me do that
Make me do this, make me do that
Am I the cat that takes the bird
To her the hunted, not the hunter?

Mother stands for comfort
Mother, hide the murderer
Mother hides the madman
Mother will stay mum
Mother stands for comfort
Mother will stay mum
She stands for comfort

I too can only take Kate Bush in limited doses. So, heating today’s selection is quite sufficient, and sufficiently creepy.
