Song of the Day #2,752: ‘Flesh Without Blood’ – Grimes

grimes_flesh_without_bloodCarly Rae Jepsen shows up at #11 in the Pazz & Jop poll with ‘Run Away With Me,’ the song I had at #10 on my own year-end list.

In the twelfth spot is a track by Grimes, the Canadian indie artist. This is the sort of choice that was typical of a list like this one a decade or so back, when alternative and indie artists were the critics darlings and hip-hop didn’t get much respect.

It’s an interesting contrast to the #oscarsowhite controversy, though I guess the better question is whether the Grammys have seen a similar evolution. Probably not.

As for Grimes, this is an enjoyably poppy confection but I don’t necessarily get why this track hit such a nerve with critics. It’s no better than any track on Jepsen’s album. Of course, Jepsen’s record sits at #3 on the Pazz & Jop albums list, while Grimes comes in at #4, so they seem to be hitting the same sweet spot with critics.

[Verse 1]
You claw, you fight, you lose
Got a doll that looks just like you
Remember when we used to say
“I love you” almost every day
I saw the light in you
Going out as I closed our window
You never liked me anyway

[Pre-Chorus]
Hey, hey, hey
I don’t see the light I saw in you before
And now I don’t, and now I don’t
And now I don’t care anymore
(Now I don’t care anymore)

[Chorus]
Baby, believe me
And you had every chance
You destroy everything you know
(Uncontrollable)
If you don’t need me
Just let me go

[Verse 2]
You hate, you bite, you lose
After all, I just don’t like you
It’s nice that you say you like me
But only conditionally
Your voice, it had the perfect glow
It got lost when you gave it up though
Cause you want money
You want fame

[Pre-Chorus]
Hey, hey, hey
I don’t see the light I saw in you before
And now I don’t, and now I don’t
And now I don’t care anymore
(And now I don’t care anymore)

[Chorus]
Baby, believe me
And you had every chance
You destroy everything you know
(Uncontrollable)
If you don’t need me
Just let me go

[Bridge]
Ooh, ooh
(Hey, hey, sing along, baby
Then your heart beats
Bleeds underground now)
Hey, hey, oh no
(Now I don’t care anymore)

[Chorus]
Baby, believe me
And you had every chance
You destroy everything you know
(Uncontrollable)
If you don’t need me
Just let me go
Baby, believe me
And you had every chance
You destroy everything you know
(Uncontrollable)
If you don’t need me
Just let me go

[Outro]
Ah
(Uncontrollable)
Ah
Ah
Ah

This sort of soulless electronic pop just leaves me cold.

As for the Grammy’s vs. Oscars, the Grammy’s came under major criticism for ignoring certain demographics and styles of music. Their solution was to add more categories for awards (hip hop, heavy metal, etc) I also suspect the Grammy voters are a more younger, diverse block.

I’m not sure if more categories at the Oscars is the answer, though I think a best comedy movie and actor (male, female, supporting, lead) would be a good thing and could have the residual benefit of diversifying the nominees, if for no other reason than there would be more slots as a whole.
