‘Somebody To Love’ – Kacey Musgraves

Kacey Musgraves’ sophomore album, Pageant Material, was a bit of a let-down after her sparkling debut, Same Trailer, Different Park. It’s not that the songs were worse, but rather they felt like more of the same.

Lead single ‘Biscuits’ was catchy as hell but really just another take on the “be yourself” mantra of ‘Follow Your Arrow.’ In fact, half of the album delivers that same message.

The standout track, and the one that most stood apart from her first record, is ‘Somebody To Love.’ Co-written with the talented and prolific Shane McAnally, this is a somber but hopeful ode to the need for human connection.

[Verse 1]
We’re all hoping, we’re all hopeless
We’re all thorns and we’re all roses
We’re all looking down our noses at ourselves
We’re all flawed and we’re all perfect
We’re all lost and we’re all hurting
And just searching for somebody to love

[Verse 2]
We’re all liars, we’re all legends
We’re all tens that want elevens
We’re all trying to get to heaven, but not today
We’re all happy, we’re all hatin’
We’re all patiently impatient
And just waiting for somebody to love

[Chorus]
We’re all good, but we ain’t angels
We all sin, but we ain’t devils
We’re all pots and we’re all kettles
But we can’t see it in ourselves
We’re all livin’ ’til we’re dying
We ain’t cool, but man, we’re trying
Just thinking we’ll be fixed by someone else

[Verse 3]
We all wrangle with religion
We all talk, but we don’t listen
We’re all starving for attention then we’ll run
We’re all paper, we’re all scissors
We’re all fightin’ with our mirrors
Scared we’ll never find somebody to love

[Chorus]
We’re all good, but we ain’t angels
We all sin, but we ain’t devils
We’re all pots and we’re all kettles
But we can’t see it in ourselves
We’re all livin’ ’til we’re dying
We ain’t cool, but man, we’re trying
Thinking we’ll be fixed by someone else

[Verse 4]
Just tryin’ to hold it all together
We all wish our best was better
Just hopin’ that forever’s really real
We’ll miss a dime to grab a nickel
Overcomplicate the simple
We’re all little kids just looking for love
Yeah, don’t we all just want somebody to love?

Nice enough song, but I can’t help but think that this appearing on your top 20 (like Dylan’s song yesterday) has more to do with you trying to shoehorn your favorite artists into the list than it does with truly representing your 20 favorite songs of the year.

And so the annual debate begins! 🙂

I think you “shoehorning” is my representing the year in music as I experienced it. Of course my yearly recap is going to include songs from the albums of my favorite artists… why wouldn’t it??

I didn’t include a song from every album I bought last year because several of my usual favorites produced rather lackluster records in 2015. But if I enjoyed an album I bought, or a particular song on one of those albums, I made sure to include it here. I also included a handful of “radio” singles by artists whose albums I don’t own.

But you concede this was a let-down album, so putting the best of a lesser crop seems a bit forced to me. Perhaps your list should be titled “favorite artists of the year.”

  4. Clay says:

But a let-down album can have good songs, and as I pointed out, this one stands out.

I’m fixated on the wonderful title Same Trailer Different Park 🙂
