While New Wave was the defining sound of the early 80s, the #1 album of 1982 was the self-titled debut by prog-rock band Asia. Asia spent more than two months at the top of the U.S. album chart.
The band was created by former members of Yes, King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer and their debut album outsold anything any of those other bands ever produced.
I know the breakout single and opening track (and today’s SOTD) ‘Heat of the Moment’ quite well, but the rest of this album is new to me, at least scanning the titles. I’m sure a few of its cuts would be instantly familiar once played.
And I’ll find out, because I just dropped $4.99 at Amazon to download this record (these theme weeks are getting expensive).
That wraps up my look back at 1982. Stay tuned in a few weeks when I’ll jump ahead another decade and take a deep dive into 1992.
One thing I said that I would never do
A look from you and I would fall from grace
And that would wipe this smile right from my face
Do you remember when we used to dance
And incidence arose from circumstance
One thing lead to another we were young
And we would scream together songs unsung
It was the heat of the moment
Telling me what your heart meant
The heat of the moment shone in your eyes
And now you find yourself in ’82
The disco hot spots hold no charm for you
You can’t concern yourself with bigger things
You catch the pearl and ride the dragon’s wings
‘Cause it’s the heat of the moment
Heat of the moment, the heat of the moment
Shone in your eyes
And when your looks are gone and you’re alone
How many nights you sit beside the phone
What were the things you wanted for yourself
Teenage ambition you remember well
It was the heat of the moment
The heat of the moment, heat of the moment
Shone in your eyes
Heat of the moment, heat of the moment
Heat of the moment
Heat of the moment, heat of the moment
I liked Asia back in the day and liked this song. I was unaware of the band’s composition, but, now that you say it, I can hear shades of those bands’ sounds in Asia.
