Song of the Day #2,493: ‘Goldfinger’ – Shirley Bassey

goldfingerIf you asked me to name a James Bond theme song, the first one I’d offer up is ‘Nobody Does it Better,’ Carly Simon’s gorgeous contribution to 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me. And fittingly, that track was nominated for an Academy Award, though it lost to ‘You Light Up My Life.’

The second song I’d name would be ‘Goldfinger.’ And really, it should have been the first, but I just dig the Carly Simon tune.

#6 – Songs Snubbed by Oscar
‘Goldfinger’ – Goldfinger

‘Goldfinger’ really kicked off idea of “Bond theme as musical event” and Shirley Bassey was asked back to sing the openers for Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker. The former was memorably sample by Kanye West on his track ‘Diamonds From Sierra Leone.’

Bassey’s performance was so iconic that she was invited to the Oscar ceremony, at age 76, to perform ‘Goldfinger’ in a ’50 Years of Bond’ tribute — despite the fact that the Academy didn’t bestow the song with a nomination in 1964.

What songs did receive a nod? ‘Dear Heart’ from Dear Heart; ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ from Mary Poppins; ‘Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte’ from Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte; ‘My Kind of Town’ from Robin and the 7 Hoods; and ‘Where Love Has Gone’ from Where Love Has Gone.

And the winner was… ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ from Mary Poppins. A deserved win, certainly, though I’m surprised ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ and ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’ missed the cut.

But not as surprised as I am by the absence of ‘Goldfinger.’

Goldfinger
He’s the man, the man with the Midas touch
A spider’s touch
Such a cold finger
Beckons you to enter his web of sin
But don’t go in

Golden words he will pour in your ear
But his lies can’t disguise what you fear
For a golden girl knows when he’s kissed her
It’s the kiss of death from

Mister Goldfinger
Pretty girl beware of this heart of gold
This heart is cold

Golden words he will pour in your ear
But his lies can’t disguise what you fear
For a golden girl knows when he’s kissed her
It’s the kiss of death from

Mister Goldfinger
Pretty girl beware of this heart of gold
This heart is cold

He loves only gold
Only gold
He loves gold
He loves only gold
Only gold
He loves gold

Well, obviously, the Academy was late to the Bond song bandwagon, though I know a number of Bond songs have been nominated since, so they got on board at some point.

I don’t know which upsets me more–that Goldfinger didn’t win or that “You Light up my life” was even nominated, just hate that song!

  3. Amy says:

A Bond song should have an automatic spot on any list of nominees.
