Song of the Day #2,482: ‘Stand By Me (Live on Letterman)’ – Tracy Chapman

Late Show with David LettermanAs a lifelong David Letterman fan, I’m disappointed with myself for not paying closer attention to his show in the weeks leading up to his retirement.

I still have time to tune in, though. The official countdown began about a week ago with a prime time special that hasn’t aired as I’m writing this (and which I plan to watch). Guests such as Bill Murray, Oprah Winfrey, Ton Hanks, Steve Martin and Tina Fey are scheduled to hit the couch.

And in typical Letterman fashion, I’m sure these final weeks will include some memorable musical performances.

Here’s one from a week or so back, a touching performance of ‘Stand By Me’ by Tracy Chapman, recorded just a day or two before the song’s original performer, Ben E. King, passed away.

[Verse 1]
When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No I won’t be afraid, no I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

[Chorus]
And darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me

[Verse 2]
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry, no I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Whenever you’re in trouble won’t you stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

I’ve been watching some of the more fun and interesting guests who have come to say goodbye to Letterman. Though I rarely have watched Letterman shows in their entirety for many years now, I will certainly miss him.

Nice idea to showcase Letterman’s last weeks; I haven’t watched him either but have always liked him and his show when I did catch it on occasion
