This track, from Annie Lennox’s 1995 hit covers album Medusa, is the odd song out on that record.
The lineup features renditions of cuts by Paul Simon, Procol Harum, Bob Marley, Al Green, Neil Young, The Clash and The Temptations. And ‘Downtown Lights’ by Blue Nile.
What the hell is Blue Nile, you ask? Good question. They are a Scottish band that has moderate success with this song in 1989. And by “moderate success” I mean it reached #67 on the UK charts.
So what is ‘Downtown Lights’ doing on Lennox’s covers album, surrounded by songs by musical legends? Apparently the band co-wrote a track on her debut album, Diva, and she returned the favor by recording this song.
When all I really wanna do
Is love and hold you right
There is just one thing I can say
Nobody loves you this way
It’s all right,can’t you see
The downtown lights
In love we’re all the same
We’re walking down an empty street
And with nobody calling on me
Empty street,empty night
The downtown lights
How do I know you feel it
How do I know you feel it
How do I know you feel it
How do I know you feel it
It’s all right
Tonight and every night
Let’s go walking down this empty street
Let’s walk in the cool evening night
Wrong or right,be t my side
The downtown lights
It will be all right
It will be all right
The downtown lights
How do I know you feel it
How do I know you feel it
How do I know you feel it
How do I know you feel it
It’s all right
Neons and cigarettes
The rented rose and rented cars
The crowded streets,the empty bars
Chimneytops,the trumpets
The golden lights,the loving prayers
Colored shoes,the empty trains
I’m tired of cring on the stairs
The downtown lights
I’m a little surprised you own this album of covers. Didn’t know you were such a big fan. Then again, Lennox has such a great voice and unique style, it’s worth listening to anything she records.
This is one of the rare albums that came to my collection through Alex.
