Song of the Day #2,430: ‘FourFiveSeconds’ – Rihanna, Kanye West & Paul McCartney

rihanna_mccartney_kanyeAt #5 on this week’s Billboard chart is the unexpected collaboration between Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. How cool that Macca is charting for a whole new generation more than 50 years after The Beatles reigned.

‘FourFiveSeconds’ is an acoustic country folk pop song that features a great vocal by Rihanna, who isn’t exactly known for her great vocals. The song has a rawness that works for her and works in general.

Say what you will about Kanye — and he deserves it all — but the guy is a talented producer across multiple genres.

[Verse 1: Rihanna]
I think I’ve had enough
I might get a little drunk
I say what’s on my mind
I might do a little time
Cause all of my kindness
Is taken for weakness

[Hook 1: Rihanna]
Now I’m FourFiveSeconds from wildin’
And we got three more days ’til Friday
I’m just tryna make it back home by Monday mornin’
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
Ooh, that’s all I want

[Verse 2: Kanye West]
Woke up an optimist
Sun was shinin’, I’m positive
Then I heard you was talkin’ trash
Hold me back, I’m ’bout to spaz

[Hook 2: Rihanna and Kanye]
Yeah, ’bout FourFiveSeconds from wildin’
And we got three more days ‘til Friday
I’m tryna make it back home by Monday mornin’
I swear I wish somebody would try me
Ooh, that’s all I want

[Bridge: Rihanna]
And I know that you’re up tonight
Thinkin’, “How could I be so selfish?”
But you called ’bout a thousand times
Wondering where I’ve been
Now I know that you’re up tonight
Thinkin’ “How could I be so reckless?”
But I just can’t apologize
I hope you can understand

[Verse 3: Kanye West]
If I go to jail tonight
Promise you’ll pay my bail
See they want to buy my pride
But that just ain’t up for sale
See all of my kindness
Is taken for weakness

[Hook 1: Rihanna and Kanye] x2

  1. Shawn says:

But, seriously, did I miss the discussion about Sukirae from Tweedy late last year?

  2. Dana says:

This is a good song, but have I mentioned I hate Kanye?

  3. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

I really love this song. It has an undeniable authenticity because of how stripped down it is. It is a surprisingly nice sound from both Rihanna and Kanye and it is very pleasant to the ear. That’s some fine guitar playing from macca too.

  4. Maddie says:

^agreed. Kanye may be a bit of a hot head, but he’s a talented guy.
