Song of the Day #2,384: ‘Seasons (Waiting On You)’ – Future Islands

future_islandsFollowing up on my list of 2014’s best songs, and the discussion it generated about my album-centric vs. radio-centric tastes, it’s a good time to dive into Village Voice’s annual Pazz & Jop poll.

This poll compiles the top-ten picks of 612 music critics, covering both albums and singles. The points are compiled to arrive at the consensus list. Over the next two weeks I’ll feature the ten highest-ranking singles according to the critics’ aggregate list (excluding songs I’ve already covered on the blog).

Holding the #1 position on this year’s poll is a surprise entry: ‘Seasons (Waiting On You)’ by Future Islands.

This Baltimore-based band has been around for 6 years and released four albums, including this year’s Singles. I call this selection a surprise because I’ve never heard of the song or the band, but a little research reveals that ‘Seasons’ was also named the best song of the year by Spin, Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound and NME. And it showed up on the top ten of many other publications.

Given all of that acclaim, I expected something a little more groundbreaking. This is a sincere and repetitive bit of synth-pop-meets-Springsteen uplift… not the sort of thing you expect music critics to go nuts over.

It seems the band’s appearance on Letterman, in which the lead singer swayed and growled his way into viral video fame, has something to do with the song catching on.

So, my radio-listening friends, is this a song that was on your radar in 2014?

[Verse 1]
Seasons change
And I tried hard just to soften you
The seasons change
But I’ve grown tired of trying to change for you
Because I’ve been waiting on you
I’ve been waiting on you
Because I’ve been waiting on you
I’ve been weighing on you

[Chorus]
As it breaks, the summer will wake
But the winter will wash what’s left of the taste
As it breaks, the summer will warm
But the winter will crave what is gone
Will crave what has all gone away

[Verse 2]
People change
But you know some people never do
You know when people change
They gain a piece but they lose one too
Because I’ve been hanging on you
I’ve been weighing on you
Because I’ve been waiting on you
I’ve been hanging on you

[Chorus]

I’ve been waiting on you…

Not on my radar.. Nice enough song, but it does seem a rather vanilla choice for all of these critics’ lists.
