Song of the Day #2,372: ‘Take Me to Church’ – Hozier

Best Songs of 2014 – #8
‘Take Me to Church’ – Hozier

Hozier is the second artist, and ‘Take Me to Church’ the second song, to arrive on this list courtesy of The Voice.

This compelling song was performed by Matt McAndrew, the contestant who should have won but came in second to country he-man Craig Wayne Boyd.

It’s probably some sort of commentary on American culture that the guy who sang this dark indictment of religion lost to the guy who sang ‘The Old Rugged Cross.’

Hozier is an Irish singer-songwriter whose self-titled debut album is full of moody, introspective songs like this one, though none quite as good.

I love that a song can reach Billboard’s top ten with a chorus that includes the lines “Take me to church, I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies, I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen you knives.”

[Verse 1]
My lover’s got humour
She’s the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody’s disapproval
I should’ve worshipped her sooner
If the heavens ever did speak
She’s the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday’s getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
“We were born sick”, you heard them say it
My church offers no absolution
She tells me “worship in the bedroom”
The only heaven I’ll be sent to
Is when I’m alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well

Amen, Amen, Amen

[Chorus] (x2)
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

[Verse 2]
If I’m a pagan of the good times
My lover’s the sunlight
To keep the goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That’s a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We’ve a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

[Chorus] (x2)

No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean

Amen, Amen, Amen

[Chorus] (x2)

Well, this song arrived to the rest of us courtesy of the radio.😜 I agree though that McAndrew did a great job with this on The Voice and he totally should have won over wholesome country boy Boyd.

And I also agree that this is a great song hat deserves a spot on any “best of 2014” list.

As you can imagine, this has been a big hit at our house aka Rainbow Acres 🙂 Laura sings it pretty well.
