Song of the Day #2,335: ‘Uptown Funk’ – Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars

bruno_mars_uptown_funkWith just 16 days left in 2014, it’s time for me shift into year-end mode. So here’s how the next few weeks on the blog will go.

This week and next I’ll feature my final look at the Billboard charts for 2014. The week of New Year’s Eve, my family and I will be out of town so I’ll put the blog in vacation mode (with some nice tracks to fill the time, I hope). Then I’ll come back in the first week of 2015 and count down my top 20 songs of the year.

Sound good? Great!

I started the Billboard series this year as a response to my Top 20 song list last year. Some readers felt that my list was a bit too insulated as a result of my avoidance of popular radio hits.

So I vowed to keep an eye on the charts this year, so I would not be spared a single ‘Fancy’ or ‘Stay With Me.’ The question is, will my exposure to those songs lead to any of them making my top 20? We shall see, in three weeks time.

Fittingly, the two songs sitting atop the Billboard chart this week will both appear in my top 20 list, though I discovered them not through Billboard but on my own. To preserve suspense, I won’t list them here.

At #3 and #4 are two tracks I have already featured on the blog, Meghan Trainor’s ‘All About That Bass‘ and Maroon 5’s ‘https://meetinmontauk.com/2014/10/15/song-of-the-day-2276-animals-maroon-5/.’

So I will be starting at #5 this week with Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk,’ a retro blast performed with typical energy and flair by Bruno Mars.

I first heard this song on The Voice, where Chris Jamison tore into it and started down a path to the eventual top three. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jamison wins the whole competition based on audience reaction to his recent performances. I’m still a Matt McAndrew guy myself.

[Verse 1]
This hit, that ice cold
Michelle Pfeiffer, that white gold
This one, for them hood girls
Them good girls
Straight masterpieces
Stylin’, wilin’
Livin’ it up in the city
Got Chucks on with Saint Laurent
Gotta kiss myself I’m so pretty

[Pre-Chorus]
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Call the police and the fireman
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Make a dragon wanna retire man
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Say my name you know who I am
I’m too hot (hot damn)
And my band ’bout that money
Break it down

[Chorus]
Girls hit your hallelujah
Girls hit your hallelujah
Girls hit your hallelujah
Cause Uptown Funk gon’ give it to you
Cause Uptown Funk gon’ give it to you
Cause Uptown Funk gon’ give it to you
Saturday night and we in the spot
Don’t believe me, just watch (come on)
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Hey, hey, hey, oh!

[Verse 2]
Stop
Wait a minute
Fill my cup put some liquor in it
Take a sip, sign the check
Julio! Get the stretch!
Ride to Harlem, Hollywood, Jackson, Mississippi
If we show up, we gon’ show out
Smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy

[Pre-Chorus 2]
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Call the police and the fireman
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Make a dragon wanna retire man
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Bitch, say my name you know who I am!
I’m too hot (hot damn)
And my band ’bout that money
Break it down

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
Before we leave
Lemme tell y’all a lil’ something
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
I said Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Come on, dance
Jump on it
If you sexy then flaunt it
If you freaky then own it
Don’t brag about it, come show me
Come on, dance
Jump on it
If you sexy then flaunt it
Well it’s Saturday night and we in the spot

[Part-Chorus]

[Outro]
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up (say whaa?!)
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up (say whaa?!)
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up (say whaa?!)
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up (say whaa?!)
Uptown Funk you up

  1. Dan McGallupster says:

I cant recall if I first heard this on the Voice or SNL, but it was the snl performance that made an impression. Bruno Mars continues to impress. Sure, this song pays homage to James Brown and Prince, but those are some pretty good folks to imitate.

  2. Maddie says:

Love this song 🙂 Bruno Mars just keeps growing on me more and more.

  3. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

Awesome song. Not actually sure what Mark Ronson really does, but I like it a lot so I guess some credit is due to him too. Bruno Mars is certainly one of the coolest artist in the game right now. This song is no exception to his usual greatness.

  4. Amy says:

I didn’t realize until reading your blog today that the song Chris did a few weeks ago and the song Bruno Mars did on the finale were one and the same. LOVE this song!!
