Song of the Day #2,309: ‘Jealous’ – Beyoncé

Best Albums of the 10s So Far
#10 – Beyoncé – Beyoncé

I can name a few reasons why Beyoncé’s self-titled December 2013 release belongs on this list.

First is the industry-rattling manner in which it was released — as a complete surprise, with no advance publicity and no online leaks (of its very existence, let alone the music). Nobody imagined such a thing was possible in this era of transparency, let alone by the most visible star in the musical universe.

Second is the ambitious nature of the “visual album,” with every song accompanied by a video. And these videos aren’t cobbled together — each is a mini-movie, with high production values and thematic content that enriches the music. The release was immersive in a way no album before it has been.

But setting aside the uniqueness of its release and format, I’ll offer a third reason Beyoncé is one of the best albums of the decade so far — the songs.

Bouncing between R&B, hip-hop and pop, Beyoncé delivers her most personal and emotional material to date. She promotes a fiercely feminist message and explores marriage and motherhood in raw, sometimes uncomfortable ways. She delivers the sexiest ode to marital monogamy that I’ve ever heard, even as she alludes to the bumps in the road (as in today’s SOTD, ‘Jealousy’).

And, in ‘XO,’ she recorded one of the most uplifting pop songs I’ve heard in years.

In a career of major moments, it’s hard to imagine Beyoncé topping this one.

[Verse 1]
I’m in my penthouse half-naked
I cooked this meal for you naked
So where the hell you at
Just one shot left of this drink, in this glass
Don’t make me break it
I wish that you were me
So you could feel this feeling
I never broke one promise, and I know when you’re not honest
Now you got me yelling that’s because I’m jealous

If you keeping your promise, I’m keeping mine
Oh I’m jealous
If you keeping your promise, I’m keeping mine
Oh I’m jealous

Sometimes I want to walk in your shoes
Do the type of things that I never ever do
I take one look in the mirror and I say to myself
Baby girl you can’t survive like this no

[Verse 2]
Take it one step further
Freakum dress out my closet
Yoncé fillin’ out this skirt
I look damn good, I ain’t lost it
And I ain’t missed a beat
Boy you been hanging out at night
Tonight I’m staying out ’til tomorrow
Dancing on them tables ain’t got no cares, no sorrow
I ran into my ex
Said what up to his besties
Now we reminiscing how we used to flex in Texas
Don’t be jealous

[Hook + Post-Hook]

And I hate you for your lies and your covers
And I hate us for making good love to each other
And I love making you jealous but don’t judge me
And I know that I’m being hateful but that ain’t nothing
That ain’t nothing
I’m just jealous
I’m just human
Don’t judge me

  1. Dana says:

I love to look at Beyonce, but, with rare exception, I don’t find the music all that compelling. Today’s song may be honest, but it’s honestly boring. Do you really have the desire to hear this song more than once? I don’t.

  2. Clay says:

Well, I’ve heard it (and the whole album) many times, so I’d have to say yes.

I’m with you on most of Beyonce’s music. I like a few of her songs but generally it’s not my thing. That’s why I was so pleasantly surprised by this album, which I found gripping and surprising at every turn.
