Song of the Day #2,289: ‘Out of the Woods’ – Taylor Swift

taylor_swiftTaylor Swift has released a second track from her upcoming pop album, 1989, and it’s an improvement on first single ‘Shake It Off.’

‘Out of the Woods’ was co-written with Jack Antonoff of fun. and Bleachers, and you can definitely see his influence on the track’s structure and production. That’s a good thing.

Still, I’m not crazy about the repetition in the chorus, and it’s a bit concerning that both tracks from 1989 have gone to that well.

This song is reportedly one of the few on the album about romantic relationships — in this case her time with Harry Styles of One Direction.

This also marks the third time I’ve referenced One Direction on the blog in the past week.

[Verse 1]
Looking at it now
It all seemed so simple
We were lying on your couch
I remember
You took a Polaroid of us
Then discovered (then discovered)
The rest of the world is black and white
But we were in screaming color
And I remember thinkin’

[Chorus] x2
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet? Good

[Post-Chorus]
(Are we out of the wo-o-ods?!)

[Verse 2]
Looking at it now
Last December (last december)
We were built to fall apart
And fall back together (back together)
Your necklace hanging from my neck
The night we couldn’t quite forget, when we decided
We decided, to move the furniture so we could dance
Baby like we stood a chance
Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying
And I remember thinkin’

[Chorus] (x2)

[Post-Chorus]

[Bridge]
Remember when you hit the brakes too soon?
20 stitches in the hospital room
And you started cryin’, baby I did too
But when the sun came up, I was lookin’ at you
Remember when we couldn’t take the heat
I walked out and said I’m settin’ you free
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
And when the sun came up, you were lookin’ at me
You were lookin’ at me
You were lookin’ at me, ooh
I remember, oh I remember

[Chorus] (x4)

The video appears to have been removed. However, I’ve heard the song and generally agree with your opinion. You hear the Antonoff influence a bit more in the chorus than verse, but, as you mentioned, the chorus is the weaker part of the song.

Meanwhile, Rolling Stone just gave 1989 a glowing review. That has me intrigued and optimistic.

I’ve only heard the album once through, but I dig it 🙂 (totally biased)
