Song of the Day #2,261: ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ – Lorde

lorde_royalsIt’s been more than a year since Lorde released her celebrated debut album, Pure Heroine, but there’s no rest for a modern-day pop star, so naturally everybody is wondering what the hell she’s done for us lately.

Well, there’s no telling when her next album will be out, but for now we have this excellent offering from the soundtrack to the upcoming Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

The Hunger Games trilogy has proved fertile ground for a certain kind of earthy/spacey alternative rock. Taylor Swift delivered one of her finest moments, ‘Safe & Sound,’ for the first film. Coldplay led the Catching Fire soundtrack with the elegiac ‘Atlas.’

But this bit of moody synth-pop by Lorde is the best of the bunch. It’s a natural progression from her debut — same provocative lyrics and emotional delivery paired with a much fuller sound.

It makes the wait for that next album a little easier, but raises the expectations at the same time.

[Verse 1]
I’m a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm
And the scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold
My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones
It keeps my veins hot, the fires find a home in me
I move through town, I’m quiet like a fight
And my necklace is of rope, I tie it and untie it

[Pre-Chorus 1]
People talk to me, but nothing ever hits home
People talk to me, and all the voices just burn holes
I’m done with it (ooh)

[Chorus]
This is the start of how it all ever ends
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I’m speeding up and this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart
We’re at the start, the colors disappear
I never watch the stars, there’s so much down here
So I just try to keep up with them
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart

[Verse 2]
I dream all year, but they’re not the same kinds
And the shivers move down my shoulder blades in double time

[Pre-Chorus 2]
And now people talk to me I’m slipping out of reach now
People talk to me, and all their faces blur
But I got my fingers laced together and I made a little prison
And I’m locking up everyone that ever laid a finger on me
I’m done with it (ooh)

[Chorus]

[Outro]
And this is the red, orange, yellow flicker beat
Sparking up my heart
And this is the red, orange, yellow flicker beat-beat-beat-beat

This is good, though I’m not sure it tops Swifts’ Hunger Games contribution, which was a more clear departure from her other work. This sounds very much like the songs Lorde offered on her debut album. As I like her sound, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but It does cause me to question whether her next album will really be a progression, evolution or more of the same.

I’m so excited for this album 🙂 Lorde seems like she knows what she is doing. Fingers crossed!
