Song of the Day #2,218: ‘Come and Get Your Love’ – Redbone

guardians_of_the_galaxyGiven the back-loaded nature of major movie releases, I think it’s safe to call late August the mid-point of the cinematic year. So this week I’ll count down my top five films of 2014 so far.

This is a very strong list. It’s hard for me to imagine any of these five movies not being in my top ten at the end of the year, but with an impressive slate of films still to come, I’m sure that’s a possibility. Good problem to have.

Most memorable films make good use of music, and these are no exception. I’ll feature a soundtrack tune from each.

If you had told me that my favorite Marvel movie, after countless solid episodes following the Avengers’ adventures, would be a comic space opera about a bunch of characters nobody has ever heard of… I might actually have believed you. The trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy grabbed me right away, and the happy surprise is that the film lived up to that promise.

I adore this cast ā€” Chris Pratt, the world’s unlikeliest action hero; the smoking hot (even when green) Zoe Saldana; Dave Bautista, a professional wrestler with a gift for deadpan comedy; and the film’s two biggest stars, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, hidden from sight in the form of, respectively, a raccoon and a tree.

I adore the sardonic but good-hearted humor that permeates every scene. I adore the film’s well-earned earnestness. And I adore Awesome Mix Tape #1, from which today’s SOTD is culled. Looking forward to Awesome Mix Tape #2, along with the second chapter of Guardians.

Hail (hail)
What’s the matter with your head, yeah
Hail (hail)
What’s the matter with your mind
And your sign an-a, oh-oh-oh
Hail (hail)
Nothin’ the matter with your head
Baby find it, come on and find it
Hail, with it baby
‘Cause you’re fine
And you’re mine, and you look so divine
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Hail (hail)
What’s the matter with you feel right
Don’t you feel right baby
Hail, oh yeah
Get it from the main vine, all right
I said-a find it, find it
Go on and love it if you like it, yeah
Hail (hail)
It’s your business if you want some, take some
Get it together baby
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Hail (hail)
What’s the matter with you feel right
Don’t you feel right baby
Hail, oh yeah
Get it from the main vine, all right
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love

Well, you won’t get much argument from my son as to your accolades, except maybe that this isn’t your number one film.

I really liked the film, and the music was, of course, vitally integrated. I wouldn’t place it at the top of the Marvel collection, however. That honor, for me, goes to Iron Man.

Great song! I haven’t seen the movie but Doug enjoyed it with Daniel šŸ™‚
Looking forward to this theme week!

One of my favorite songs on the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. I don’t think I’ve ever liked a title sequence as much as the one in this movie. I believe the song played a big part in that. They were actually going to put Hooked on a Feeling as the song he sings in the beginning, but James Gunn discovered this song and loved it.
