Song of the Day #2,205: ‘Maps’ – Maroon 5

maroon_5_mapsAt #4 this week is Nico & Vinz, with the boring but popular ‘Am I Wrong?‘ Dropping to fifth place is Ariana Grande’s ‘Problem,’ my pick for Song of the Summer.

‘Problem’ spent awhile at #2, but was unable to unseat ‘Fancy’ for the top spot during that span. As Iggy Izalea raps on ‘Problem,’ that meant she occupied both of those positions for more than a month. She’s certainly the Artist of the Summer (a spot Pharrell earned last year, appearing on both ‘Blurred Lines’ and ‘Get Lucky’).

At #6 is Maroon 5, with ‘Maps.’ I’ve never really given this track a good listen so I’ll do that now.

I have a history of not “getting” Maroon 5 songs on first listen. It took me a little while to appreciate both ‘Moves Like Jagger’ and ‘Payphone,’ two songs I really dig now. Maybe this one will follow the same trajectory, because I find it fine but not very memorable.

I’m more intrigued by the video, which is told in backward Memento fashion and chronicles the hazards of getting drunk at a party and cheating on your supermodel girlfriend with another supermodel. Apparently that leads to death, but only for the first supermodel.

[Verse 1]
I miss the taste of a sweeter life
I miss the conversation
I’m searching for a song tonight
I’m changing all of the stations
I like to think that we had it all
We drew a map to a better place
But on that road I took a fall
Oh baby why did you run away?

[Pre-hook]
I was there for you
In your darkest times
I was there for you
In your darkest night

[Hook]
But I wonder, where were you?
When I was at my worst
Down on my knees
And you said you had my back
So I wonder, where were you?
All the roads you took came back to me
So I’m following the map that leads to you
The map that leads to you
Ain’t nothing I can do
The map that leads to you
Following, following, following to you
The map that leads to you
Ain’t nothing I can do
The map that leads to you
Following, following, following

[Verse 2]
I hear your voice in my sleep at night
Hard to resist temptation
Cause something strange has come over me
Now I can’t get over you
No, I just can’t get over you!

[Pre-hook + Hook]

[Pre-hook x2]

That really is a pretty dark video to accompany a light pop song.

I’ve now heard this song about a half dozen times and it hasn’t stuck with me as much as the other hits you mentioned. frankly, while I have enjoyed some of The band’s more recent mega-hits, I liked their jazzier sound of years past so much better. With the success they have been having of late, I’m not sure they will ever return to that sound, but it really wish they would.

I actually sort of hated this song the first time I heard it, and it has grown on me in that I no longer have such a strong visceral reaction. Still, there’s nothing fresh or interesting about it, so it does make me sort of sad whenever i hear it.
