Song of the Day #2,171: ‘So. Central Rain (Live on Letterman)’ – R.E.M.

remMy desert island countdown continues (see Monday’s post for the full explanation).

Desert Island Musical Artists – #3 – R.E.M.

As I’ve written many times on this blog, no artist has as powerful an emotional pull on me as R.E.M. Their music transports me to different moments in my life like a sonic time machine.

I imagine my memories of life on the mainland will slowly fade as I grow accustomed to my new island life, so I will count on Berry, Buck, Mills and Stipe to bathe me in sweet nostalgia.

Desert Island TV Series – #3 – Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Before he was the top Avenger, Joss Whedon perfected his brand of emotionally resonant snark on a genre mashup that was a decade ahead of its time.

Using assorted vampires and demons as metaphors for the perils of adolescence, Whedon delivered one of the funniest and most engrossing television series in history — beloved by critics, ignored by awards shows and obsessed over by its small but passionate fan base.

Desert Island Movie Directors – #3 – Steven Spielberg

The quintessential American filmmaker, Steven Spielberg has delivered grand entertainment for nearly 45 years.

Sure, repeated viewings of Jaws might make me scared to go into the water surrounding my island, but that won’t keep me from one of the greatest films ever made. Ditto Raiders of the Lost Ark, which still makes me feel like a 12 year-old boy.

Spielberg has had his iffy moments over the years, but even his misses will be worth revisiting (or visiting for the first time) on my island. And I’ll make sure I’m equipped with the biggest screen possible, and sweet surround sound, to enjoy his most transporting work.

Did you never call? I waited for your call
These rivers of suggestion are driving me away
The trees will bend, the cities wash away
The city on the river there is a girl without a dream

I’m sorry

Eastern to Mountain, third party call, the lines are down
The wise man built his words upon the rocks
But I’m not bound to follow suit
The trees will bend, the conversation’s dimmed
Go build yourself another home, this choice isn’t mine

Did you never call? I waited for your call
These rivers of suggestion are driving me away
The ocean sang, the conversation’s dimmed
Go build yourself another dream, this choice isn’t mine

  1. Dana says:

Good music and director picks, though both have had missteps during their very long careers.

As for Buffy, I’ve only seen the first 2 or 3, but, I must confess, I was not drawn in. Perhaps we will continue on, as you have indicated the first season is weaker than the rest.

Great video by the way of a young Letterman and younger REM.

I too agree with the music and direction but not the TV series, but then I’m not into vampire stuff 🙂

Ditto. I already gave away my Spielberg pick in my comment on Monday’s blog. He’s the surest pick of all. R.E.M. Would also make my list, but there are far too many shows I love. For today, let’s go with Friends, as Dana’s point about needing your spirits lifted makes a lot of sense. Every time we’re all on vacation, we wind up finding marathon episodes of Friends on some random channel (maybe TV Land?? is that a station?) Anyway, whether I’ve seen one of the episodes once or a half dozen times, I can always watch again, laugh at all the lines that were funny the first time around and get choked up during the poignant moments. So… yeah, Friends.
