Song of the Day #2,127: ‘Anna Begins’ – Counting Crows

augustandI’ve enjoyed the past two weeks of favorite songs so much that I’m dedicating this week to some honorable mentions.

It’s pretty clear that there are hundreds of songs in the running and one batch could easily replace another depending on my mood. Here are five more that almost made the cut this time around.

‘Anna Begins’ is my favorite Counting Crows song, the track on their debut album that completely absorbed me.

I wrote about this song way back at Song of the Day #22 during a theme week on the summer I met my wife. This is one of the songs that still defines that era in my heart and mind 21 years later.

[Verse 1]
My friend assures me, “It’s all or nothing”
I am not worried, I am not overly concerned
My friend implores me, “For one time only
Make an exception” I am not worried

[Verse 2]
Wrap her up in a package of lies
Send her off to a coconut island
I am not worried
I am not overly concerned

[Verse 3]
With the status of my emotions
Oh, she says, “Your changing”
But we’re always changing
It does not bother me to say

[Verse 4]
This isn’t love
Cause if you don’t wanna to talk about it
Then it isn’t love
And I guess, I’m gonna have to live without

[Verse 5]
But I’m sure there’s something’ in a shade of gray
Or something’ in between
And I can always change my name
If that’s what you mean

[Verse 6]
My friend assures me, “It’s all or nothing”
But I am not really worried
I am not overly concerned

You try to tell your self the things, you try tell your self
To make yourself forget, to make your self forget
I am not worried

[Verse 7]
“If it’s love” She said
Then we’ve gonna have to think about the consequences
Cause she can’t stop shaking’
And I can’t stop touching’ her

[Chorus]
And this time when kindness falls like rain
It washes her away
And Anna begins to change her mind

[Verse 8]
“These seconds when I’m shaking’
Leave me shuddering’ for days” She says
And I’m not ready for this sort of thing

But I’m not gonna break
And I’m not gonna worry about it anymore
I’m not gonna bend and I’m not gonna break
Gonna worry about it anymore
No, no, no, no, no

[Verse 9]
It seems like I should say
“As long as this is love”
But it’s not all that easy so maybe I should

Snap her up in a butterfly net
And pin her down on a photograph album
I am not worried
Cause you’ve done this sort of thing before

[Interlude]
But then I start to think about the consequences
Cause I don’t get no sleep in a quiet room

[Chorus]

[Verse 10]
Every time she sneezes
I believe it’s love
And oh, Lord, I’m not ready for this sort of thing

She’s talking’ in her sleep
It’s keeping’ me awake
And Anna begins to toss and turn

[Verse 11]
And every word is nonsense
But I understand
And oh, Lord, I’m not ready for this sort of thing

Her kindness bangs a gong
It’s moving’ me along
And Anna begins to fade away

[Outro]
It’s chasing’ me away
She disappears
And oh, Lord, I’m not ready for this sort of thing

I was wondering if this would show up on your list. No surprise here, and a worthy selection.

To those not as familiar with this wonderful song, I highly recommend clicking on the link provided to the original. While this acoustic version is lovely, Durwitz, as he often does, has substantially changed the melody in this version.

I think “absorbs” is the perfect word to describe the impact Adam’s delivery can have on the listener. He so passionately sings a song that he does absolutely absorb the listener. Anna Begins is certainly one of my very favorite Counting Crows songs, and one of my favorite songs – period. Great choice.

It’s nice you’ll be able to hear them in person soon with your lovely wife 🙂
