Song of the Day #2,116: ‘Birthday’ – Katy Perry

katy_perry_birthdayYou have to give Katy Perry credit for trying.

Whether or not you like her music, the woman sure works hard to entertain. In the video for her latest single, ‘Birthday,’ she convincingly disguises herself as an elderly stripper, a Jewish comedian, a clown, a grizzled animal trainer and a princess and crashes the birthday parties of unsuspecting victims.

The bar mitzvah segment is vaguely anti-Semitic (how vaguely depends on your particular sensitivities, I suppose). When Perry, the daughter of a pastor who’s been accused of delivering anti-Jewish sermons, says (in character) that she’s taking the job only because the money is good, that doesn’t help.

The song is one of the catchier cuts from Perry’s Prism. It’s a favorite of my 8-year-old daughter, who thinks it’s actually about a birthday (the double-entendres mercifully fly right over her head).

[Verse 1]
I heard you’re feeling nothing’s going right
Why don’t you let me stop by?
The clock is ticking, running out of time
So we should party all night

[Pre-Chorus]
So cover your eyes, I have a surprise
I hope you got a healthy appetite
If you wanna dance, if you want it all
You know that I’m the girl that you should call

[Chorus]
But when you’re with me, I’ll give you a taste
Make it like your birthday every day
I know you like it sweet, so you can have your cake
Give you something good to celebrate

[Post-Chorus]
So make, a wish
I’ll make it like your birthday every day
I’ll be, your gift
Give you something good to celebrate

[Verse 2]
Pop your confetti, pop your Pérignon
So hot and heavy till dawn
I got you spinning like a disco ball
I’ll have them playing your song

[Pre-Chorus 2]
We’re living the life, we’re doing it right
You’re never gonna be unsatisfied
If you wanna dance, if you want it all
You know that I’m the girl that you should call

[Chorus + Post-Chorus]

[Bridge]
Happy birthday…
So let me get you in your birthday suit
It’s time to bring out the big balloons
So let me get you in your birthday suit
It’s time to bring out the big, big, big, big, big, big balloons

[Chorus x2 + Post-Chorus]

[Outro]
Happy birthday…

  1. Dana says:

It’s amazing how every generation has any number of songs with subtle or not so subtle double entendres that younger kids innocently enjoy.

As for the video, as the representative Jewish commenter, I don’t really find the character offensive.

What a lovely celebration of life. I haven’t liked her this much since she kissed a girl and she liked it. Just wonderful!
