Song of the Day #2,096: ‘The Man’ – Aloe Blacc

aloe_blacc_the_manComing in at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart is Aloe Blacc’s ‘The Man.’

To clarify, the songs I’m posting this week and last are the ten highest-ranked Billboard songs on the day I looked (10 days ago or so). That list has changed since, though not very much. Mostly it’s the same songs just shuffled around a bit. So if you’re checking now and Aloe Blacc is higher than #10, that’s why.

Prior to this song, Blacc was best-known for providing the vocals to Avicii’s dance-folk hit ‘Wake Me Up.’ ‘The Man’ moves him into the spotlight and has proved quite a hit in its own right.

It’s a pretty good song, making use of a one-line snippet of Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ to propel a catchy chorus. I wonder how many teens who love this song have ever heard Elton’s.

[Hook]
Well you can tell everybody
Yeah you can tell everybody
Go ahead and tell everybody
I’m the man I’m the man I’m the man

[Post-Hook]
Yes I am yes I am yes I am
I’m the man I’m the man I’m the man

[Verse 1]
I believe every lie that I ever told
Paid for every heart that I ever stole
I played my cards and I didn’t fold
Well it ain’t that hard when you got soul
(This is my world)
Somewhere I heard that life is a test
I been through the worst but still I give my best
God made my mold different from the rest
Then he broke that mold so I know I’m blessed
(This is my world)

[Pre-Hook]
Stand up now and face the sun
Won’t hide my tail or turn and run
It’s time to do what must be done
Be a king when kingdom comes

[Hook x2] + [Post-Hook]

[Verse 2]
I got all the answers to your questions
I’ll be the teacher you could be the lesson
I’ll be the preacher you be the confession
I’ll be the quick relief to all your stressing
(This is my world)
It’s a thin line between love and hate
Is you really real or is you really fake
I’m a solider standing on my feet
No surrender and I won’t retreat
(This is my world)

[Pre-Hook] + [Hook x2] + [Post-Hook]

[Bridge]
I’m the man
Go ahead and tell everybody what I’m saying y’all
I’m the man
Go ahead and tell everybody what I’m saying y’all

[Hook x4] + [Post-Hook]

  1. Dana says:

We are well familiar with this one, as it is one of Daniel’s jams. This means that, no matter how many times it comes on the radio, it cannot be turned off and the volume must be raised.

I generally like the song, including the use of the Elton line, though I find it gets rather repetitive.

  2. Amy says:

I typically hate songs as repetitive as this one is, but Daniel’s love for it is infectious, I must admit. That plus the Elton line has caused me to have a soft spot for this one. I love how the lyrics indicate a “pre-hook, hook, and post-hook” 🙂 As Blues Travelers long ago told us, “the hook will bring you back.” Clearly it has worked for this song.
