Song of the Day #2,089: ‘All of Me’ – John Legend

The next two weeks will feature the second installment of my “Keeping up With the Charts” series, wherein I post the songs topping the Billboard Hot 100 in an effort to keep up with what the kids are listening to these days.

This week, three of the top five songs are leftovers from the last time I did this, suggesting that the Hot 100 doesn’t see a whole lot of turnover.

In the top spot it Pharrell’s ‘Happy,’ which has climbed a few notches since I featured it as a SOTD. This is the infectious song’s fourth straight week at #1.

In second place is Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse,’ which was at #1 the last time I kept up with the charts. That woman is unstoppable.

At #3 is John Legend’s ‘All Of Me,’ a pretty piano ballad dedicated to his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, who also appears in the video.

While I like John Legend as a person, I must admit I find his music rather boring. Apart from the falsetto part of the chorus, which is effective, this song is a snooze.

[Verse 1: John Legend]
What would I do without your smart mouth
Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
Got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down
What’s going on in that beautiful mind
I’m on your magical mystery ride
And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright

[Bridge: John Legend]
My head’s under water
But I’m breathing fine
You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

[Hook: John Legend]
‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you

[Verse 2: John Legend]
How many times do I have to tell you
Even when you’re crying you’re beautiful too
The world is beating you down, I’m around through every mood
You’re my downfall, you’re my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can’t stop singing, it’s ringing, in my head for you

[Bridge: John Legend]

[Hook: John Legend]
Cards on the table, we’re both showing hearts
Risking it all, though it’s hard

[Hook: John Legend]
I give you all of me
And you give me all of you

Oh boy, you are going to get a passionate rebuttal to your review on this one from Amy. She adores this song and has proclaimed it to be one of the purest and best love songs to come out in years. Frankly, I can’t say I disagree with her. This is a beautiful ballad. If you were getting married in 2014, it’s hard to think of a better contemporary song for a wedding ‘a first dance.

I guess you really do need melancholy to hold your interest, as you certainly have praised similar “snoozy” songs by other artists.

  2. Amy says:

A snooze? A snooze?!?!??! Is this the first time you’ve heard the song? Did you hear him perform it live on the Grammy’s a couple of months ago? Yes, as Dana already indicated, I adore this song. It moves me tremendously every time I hear it, a few times to tears.

Here is a stripped down version of it performed by one of my favorite (now departed 😦 ) early Idols – made all the more special because MK had become the poster child for accepting one’s “imperfections,” whatever those might be (or others might perceive those to be) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik2WELm17vs

And here is the live performance by John Legend. If you’re snoozing through this, you need to get more sleep!!!

Glad it’s time to review the charts again! 🙂

I did hear it on the Grammys, and I’ve heard it a few times since, but it always has a hard time holding my attention. I think it’s the rare stripped-down piano ballad that can sustain for the whole length of a song, and for me this isn’t one of them.
