Song of the Day #2,036: ‘Diane Young’ – Vampire Weekend

vampire_weekend_stepThe 15th, 16th and 17th songs on Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop poll have already been featured on this blog. They are Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball,’ Phosphorescent’s ‘Song for Zula’ and Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Follow Your Arrow.’ All good choices, as is #18, today’s SOTD.

Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires of the City shows up second (to Kanye) on the accompanying list of the best albums of 2013, a sentiment I wholly endorse, having listed the album as my favorite of last year.

The album list in general is more interesting than the singles list. Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning Random Access Memories shows up third, while Beyoncé’s surprise eponymous album is in fourth. Haim and Kacey Musgraves make the top ten.

But while Kanye put three singles into the top 10 songs list, Vampire Weekend managed only one in the top 20.

‘Diane Young’ is indeed a great song, even if it’s my fifth or sixth favorite on the album. It’s a splendid mix of rockabilly and surf rock that beautifully captures how thoroughly these guys have mastered the composition and recording process.

[Verse Annotate1]
You torched a Saab like a pile of leaves
I’d gone to find some better wheels
Four, five meters running round the bend
When the government agents surround you again

[Hook]
If Diane Young won’t change your mind
Baby, baby, baby, baby right on time

[Verse 2]
Out of control but you’re playing a role
Do you think you can go til the 18th hole
Or will you flip-flop the day of the championship?
Try to go it alone on your own for a bit

[Hook]

[Bridge]
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Baby baby baby it’s a light on
Baby baby baby it’s a lifetime
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Time, time, time, time, time, time
Baby baby baby baby ride on time

[Hook]

[Verse 3]
Irish and proud, baby, naturally
But you got the luck of a Kennedy
So grab the wheel, keep on holding it tight
‘Til you’re tottering off into that goodnight

[Hook]

[Bridge]

[Breakdown]
Nobody knows what the future holds
And it’s bad enough just getting old
Live my life in self-defense
You know I love the past, ’cause I hate suspense…

[Hook]

This is actually one of my favorites on this very strong album. Nice to read the lyrics also, as I thought he was singing “right on time.”

  2. Andrea Katz says:

Surf Rock? I learn something new here all the time!
