Bruno Mars – ‘Locked Out of Heaven’

This is another one that came up in my comments to your list regarding what I thought were some conspicuous omissions.

Like you, I am not a huge fan of Mars, and I have never bought one of his albums. However, his talent is really quite undeniable, even if I don’t always love his style.

In this song, though, he had me hooked from the opening gate. Sure, it helps that he is paying homage to the great reggae sound of the Police. That’s a winning tribute in my book. But the song also stands on its own as a great pop song.

[Intro]
Oh, yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooh!

[Verse 1]
Never had much faith in love or miracles
Never want to put my heart on the line
But swimming in your world is something spiritual
I’m born again every time you spend the night

[Hook]
So your sex takes me to paradise
Yeah your sex takes me to paradise
And it shows
Cause you make me feel like, I been locked out of heaven
For too long, for too long
Yeah you make me feel like, I been locked out of heaven
For too long, for too long

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooh!
Oh, yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooh!

[Verse 2]
You bring me to my knees, you make me testify
You could make a sinner change his ways
Open up your gates cause I can’t wait to see the light
And right there is where I wanna stay

[Hook]

Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
Can I just stay here?
Spend the rest of my days here?
Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah

[Bridge]
Can I just stay here?
Spend the rest of my days here?
Cause you make me feel like, I been locked out of heaven
For too long, for too long
Yeah you make me feel like, I been locked out heaven
For too long, for too long

[Outro]
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooh!
Oh, yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooh!

I could never really get past the Police homage to enjoy this song on its own. It is pretty catchy, and I certainly don’t dislike it, but it’s not something I’d consider one of the best of the year.

Well, sting likes it. Loved this performance on the Grammy’s:

I always like any Bruno Mars’ song that is playing on the radio, but none of them has ever completely captured me. Still, I agree that he is immensely talented (and funny – did you see his appearance on SNL last year? 🙂 )
