Song of the Day #1,980: ‘A Lot Like Magic’ – Josh Rouse

Here’s the Josh Rouse song I alluded to during the most recent Random Weekend.

Rouse has always reminded me of Paul Simon, even before he started dabbling in exotic rhythms. He has a similar knack for infectious melodies, usually based around an acoustic guitar with occasional horn flourishes. Stylistically, much of Rouse’s discography could fit comfortably on Simon’s early solo albums.

The Happiness Waltz is an album in that vein after a few years of detours into more of a world music sound. And as interesting as those detours were, this record is a welcome return to the Josh Rouse form I like best.

Well I met a man and he gave me advice
I didn’t want it at first, then I said alright
He said “You live each day like the very last one”
So I took that down and I wrote this song
He said:

It’s all in the air,
It’s a lot like magic,
We make due with the best that we have
You sit still or you roam and
Something’s bound to happen
So I just shook his hand
Forgot about my plan

So I rode my bike up to Sycamore Hill
I thought hard, I thought long
On the right way to live
I had a lot of fun with a long-legged girl
And we threw our arms round this humdrum world

It’s all in the air
It’s a lot like magic
We make due with the best that we have
You sit still or you roam and
Something’s bound to happen
Forget about those plans
The future’s here at last

Well, the days turn to months
And the months into years
My children have grown and I’m still standing here
I still live each day like the very last one
I’ll rise with the birds and I’ll set with the sun

Cos it’s all in the air
It’s a lot like magic
We make due with the best that we have
You sit still or you roam and
Something’s bound to happen
Forget about those plans

I agree he has a Paul Simon vibe. Too bad he hasn’t been able to translate that into more commercial success. It always puzzles me how artists who consistently produce quality accessible music manage to toil in their trade for years without even a single hit song. I’m not sure that will ever happen for Rouse, and that’s a shame. More people should hear him.

It’s funny, I was going to say that he reminded me of Paul Simon when I listened to the “Happiness Waltz” the other day; glad you brought that up 🙂
