Song of the Day #1,963: ‘Open’ – Rhye

rhye_openBest Songs of 2013 – #25

It might seem a little early to start counting down the best songs of a year that still has a month to go, but looking at the upcoming release schedule, I’m pretty confident that I’ve heard pretty much everything I need to hear in 2013.

If, over the next four weeks, I happen upon a great song — either new or new to me — that deserved to be on this list, I’ll write about it the first week of 2014. Hard to believe, but that’s right around the corner.

My year-end song list is designed to provide a snapshot of the music that meant the most to me without feeling redundant. To that end, I’ve always adhered to a ‘one song per album’ rule that might give some great songs the shaft, but at least prevents this list from featuring six songs apiece from the same two albums.

This year I made an effort to stretch beyond just those albums that I purchases (which tend to be by bands I already know and like). I read quite a few “best so far” lists to discover songs that weren’t on my radar. A few of those made it onto my list (including today’s SOTD).

I’ll count down five songs per week, pausing for the usual Random Weekends, and finish up on Dec. 27.

Enough housekeeping… let’s get to the songs.

Rhye’s ‘Open’ is one of the tracks I discovered when casting my net for missed gems. I was immediately drawn in by its sensuality (underscored by its beautifully filmed video). It has a Sade feel.

I’d heard the song several times before I discovered that the singer is a man. I was tempted to withhold that information to see if my readers would know or guess that on their own, but I couldn’t resist spilling the beans. Lead singer Mike Milosh sure has one of the more interesting voices I’ve heard in awhile.

I’m a fool for that shake in your thighs
I’m a fool for that sound in your sighs
Im a fool for your belly
Im a fool for your love

I wanna make this plain
Oh, I know you’re faded
Mm, but stay, don’t close your eyes
I wanna make this plain
Oh, I know you’re faded
Mm, but stay, don’t close your eyes

Caught in this pool held in your eyes
Caught like a fool without a line
We’re in a natural spring
With this gentle sting between us

I wanna make this plain
Oh, I know you’re faded
Mm, but stay, don’t close your eyes
I wanna make this plain
Oh, I know you’re faded
Mm, but stay, don’t close your eyes

Ooohhh, stay open
Ooohhh, stay open

Stay open
Stay open

I wanna make this plain
Oh, I know you’re faded
Mm, but stay, don’t close your eyes
I wanna make this plain
Oh, I know you’re faded
Mm, but stay, don’t close your eyes

Stay open
Stay open
Stay open

Mmm, stay open

I’ve never heard of Rhye and I haven’t heard this song. And, to your spoiler, I probably would have assumed this was a female singer.

Very sensual song, but like the work of Sade to which you compare this, there’s only so much of this I can here before I become a bit bored.
