Song of the Day #1,886: ‘Breakin’ the Chains of Love’ – Fitz & the Tantrums

fitz_tantrums_pickin_up_piecesI tend to buy new music in bunches. I suppose that’s because studios tend to time releases around particular periods, though apart from the holidays I’m not sure how that makes much sense.

At any rate, I’ve purchased five albums in the past week, a nice round number for SOTD purposes. I’ll feature one track from each this week.

In truth my wife purchased today’s album, Fitz & the Tantrums’ 2010 debut, though I pulled the trigger on Amazon. She heard one of their songs in a store and identified them via Shazam (a brilliant invention).

She’s entirely unlike me when it comes to buying new music. I study and analyze and sample and debate before buying something from a new artist. She hears half of a song in an Ann Taylor dressing room and she’s all in.

In fairness, I buy a lot more music than she does so it’s rare that she is moved in that way. And when she is, she usually turns out to be right.

I haven’t heard this album in its entirety (yet), nor have I heard the other Fitz & the Tantrums album we bought, which I will feature later this week. But based on this song alone, I love these guys and the whole neo-soul thing they’ve got going.

I’ve been trying, to get you
To see things all my way
For the days that since you’ve left me
And I know that you probably keep away

I said
Oh what a lovely day
Breaking the chains of love
I’m hoping that you won’t find a new love
Cause I know baby you’re mine

Can’t you see that you’re mine
Oh, can’t you see, can’t you see that you’re mine

You been lying and cheating
Fooling around, messing around all of the time
No way I’m gonna find you
You’re making me god damn pay

I said
Oh what a lovely day
Breaking the chains of love
I’m hoping that you won’t find a new love
Cause I know baby you’re mine

I’ve been trying, to forget you
The pictures, they don’t fade
For the days that since you’ve left me
And I know that these tears won’t wipe away

I said
Oh what a lovely day
Breaking the chains of love
I’m hoping that you won’t find a new love
Cause I know baby you’re mine

Can’t you see that you’re mine
Oh, can’t you see, can’t you see that you’re mine
Oh baby I know that you’re mine
Can’t you see that you’re mine
Oh, can’t you see, can’t you see that you’re mine

Good call, Alex! This is good stuff. I’m immediately drawn in.

By the way, what’s the deal with these two? Are they a couple? Great chemistry there in this video.

Looking forward to hearing the rest of the new music roundup.

Nice beat; it was a good call! The last time I remember wanting to buy an album after hearing one song on the radio was “Just the Way Your Are” by Billy Joel–still love The Stranger so I guess that was a good call too πŸ™‚

Peg, that was over 35 years ago. I think you need to listen to the radio more (and buy an album at least once a decade:).

    I think you’re right πŸ™‚
