Song of the Day #1,870: ‘Lost in Space’ – Fountains of Wayne

utopiaThe Random iTunes Fairy really likes Fountains of Wayne. Today’s post is the fifth Random Weekend selection in the past year, and the second this month.

I don’t keep stats on which artists show up the most on Random Weekends (though now I’m tempted) but I have to believe Fountains of Wayne are up there, especially as a percentage of their total songs in my library.

By comparison, Bob Dylan has shown up 14 times on Random Weekends, out of a total of 492 songs, a 2.8% post-to-song ratio. Fountains of Wayne show up 5 times out of 99 songs, a 5% ratio — almost twice as much as Dylan.

Elvis Costello has appeared in 13 Random Weekend posts, out of 486 songs, a 2.7% ratio very similar to Dylan’s but dwarfed by Fountains of Wayne.

One of these days I’ll have to do the full analysis. There isn’t any getting out of it now.

Have you seen that girl
With the strange look on her face?
She’s a pretty little thing but she’s lost
lost in space

She’s in another world
Yeah she’s off in a distant place
She’s a pretty little thing but she’s lost
Yeah she’s lost in space
Yeah she’s lost in space

And I can’t understand a word she says
And I don’t know why she’s such a mess
And I can’t get through no matter what I do
But I love her anyway

And she walks the earth
But she’s not from the human race
She’s a pretty little thing but she’s lost
Yeah she’s lost in space
Yeah she’s lost in space

And I can’t understand a word she says
And I don’t know why she’s such a mess
And I can’t get through no matter what I do
But I love her anyway

I’d try to talk to her
But it seems like such a waste
Cause she’s a pretty little thing but she’s lost
Yeah she’s lost in space
Yeah she’s lost in space
Yeah she’s lost in space

Well, since your loyal follower(s) like FOW, there are no complaints here as to the weighted selections. If the Random iTunes Fairy favored Morrisey, that would be a different story.

I think you need to notify Apple of this anomaly ASAP and ask that they explain themselves. Perhaps the iTunes programmers love FOW and put a code in the program to favor them.

By the way, as long as you are calculating anomalies, haven’t the Beatles been underrepresented given your complete discography of their work? Or are they popping up, but you are skipping songs already featured on the blog? Of course the skipping of songs should also be factored in for Dylan and Costello if you want to truly examine any anomalies.

Please report back your findings by COB August 30, 2013,πŸ˜„

Excellent point about The Beatles. I have 238 songs of theirs in my library and, believe it or not, they have never appeared on a Random Weekend.

It’s possible that they might have come up as a random selection once or twice but been discarded as a repeat, but I don’t think so. In more than a year of Random Weekends I can only remember 3-4 occasions when I had to pick again because the first song generated was already on the blog.
